To everyone on my lists-- Pass this on! Call people if necessary! The "badtrans" virus is nasty--I got it from a person last night, and it is likely to shut down the Rootsweb system for a time. This virus attacks all unopened emails in your inbox. The addys from the unopened emails get slammed with a lot of e's, if you open the attachment. Unfortunately, I only opened 2 or 3 e's last night, thinking I was smart to wait until this morning. When I started downloading mail this morning, and my program said I had over 400 messages, something was wrong, and I shut it down immediately. Greg got it fixed. We use Norton and if you have not run an update lately, you will need to do so if you get the bug. Go to http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ and find the "w32.badtrans.13312@mm." Get it fixed. My system sent out, or tried to send out, nearly 4,000 emails during the short time I had Outlook open last night. The reason this passes on--and I have stressed this before, and I'm yelling now--folks hit the "reply" button that does not send the post through Rootsweb. I'm sure you have noticed in your inbox that some folks' mail seems to come straight from them, and some from the list. If it comes from the list, since attachments CAN NOT go through Rootsweb, it will fail--you won't get it. If it comes from individuals, you can get viruses. DO NOT HIT REPLY. Use the post address if you are going to respond to a post (MO-Taney or MO--AR-WRV -L), cut and paste the subject line (put an "re:" if you must) and respond that way. By clicking on "Reply", you stand a chance of passing the virus on, not aware you are doing so. DO NOT OPEN ANY attachments from anyone at this time. The email, which is why I got it, says, "this is a picture I want to share with you." It is not a matter of trusting or not trusting the person--it is a matter of not knowing what you have received. So don't send anyone any pictures for a while. Emails from me are safe after 11 AM today (7 May).
