    1. [MO-AR-WRV] Atoka
    2. I am taking a stab in the dark here. I have been trying to help a friend of mine find the Cherokee connection in his family. The family always said his grandmother was either full or part Cherokee. So far, I have not made a connection. The grandmother in question was Emma Moss, married to Edward Maynard Thurman. Emma's parents were James and Margaret Moss. Margaret had been married first to a man by the name of Troy - have not found a record of either of Margaret's marriages, hence I have no maiden name. James Moss originated in Illinois, and I have his parents - don't believe he was Cherokee. Today, I received the funeral record from the eldest daughter of Edward and Emma Moss Thurman. Her name was Blanch Atoka .......the middle name looks like Atoka - could also be Atoha - it is so unusual, and sounds to me like it could be an Indian name. I'm wondering if I might have stumbled on to that Cherokee connection....I'm wondering if this could have been Blanch's grandmother's maiden name..........Margaret Moss' maiden name. I'm wondering if anyone out there has ever come across a surname like Atoka, or Atoha. If so, I'd really appreciate hearing from you. Thanks. Myrna MyrnaS@aol.com

    3. I have checked all the Cherokee rolls and find no Atoha and no Atoka. That does not mean it is not indian.. just that it is not on the Cherokee Rolls. Could be another tribe. I do show several Moss listed however. Alexander Clingman Moss, Alice Aunie, Elizabeth, Hazlitine, Henry Jackson, Jane, Jefferson Henry, John, John Benjamin, Keziah, Malissa Vandora, Margaret, Margaret Jane, Margaret E., Mary, Miles Oscoe, Milton Montgomery, Rebecca, William, and William Harrison. All listed on the Hester Roll 1883. This roll was comiled by Joseph G. Hester as a roll of Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in 1883. It is an excellent source of information, including ancestors, Chapman Roll number, age English name and Indian name. If any of these are yours just let me know and I will send you the application number so you can send of for the info. I show listings for Moss also on the Sweetland Roll 1869, Chapman Roll, Siler Roll, and Immigration Roll. All of these rolls are of the Eastern Band... The western Band shows one Moss and quite a few Thurman on the DawesGuion Miller Roll 1898-1914. I see no Emma or Edward Maynard... Margaret shown above...
