I've obviously missed out on part of this Lewallen discussion! Now, I'll go back and read it all! You all don't happen to have a Jim or James Lewallen in anyone's data do you? I really don't know what profession he was in maybe a lawyer, or as some said maybe a doctor that wanted to retire. Supposedly he came to Calico Rock, Izard Co., AR on the White River (downstream) with a railroad box car full of furnishing (the story goes). I am not sure that Jim or James had ever married but came to Calico alone as far as I can gather. He obviously had made plenty of money wherever he was from. Supposedly it was some big city, that takes in a lot considering the size of Calico especially in the 1920-30s. Anyway, the reason for my interest in this individual (as far as I know our families were not related in any way) but he adopted the son of the brother of my grandfather Herbert Addison Peck s/o William Addison Peck and Mary LuElla Remley Peck, who came to Calico and AR from WV, around Summersville where the Remley clan lived. (Peck was born in Fincastle, Botetourt Co., VA on the old family tobacco farm the best I can tell so far) The young man that Jim (or James) Lewallen adopted was named Buck and was the son of a woman named Esray ? who later married a ??Jones (I believe) At least she is chosen in the 1910 Census in Stone County, AR-town of Mtn View listed with Buck who she shows as Peck and another son, Doyle Jones. What year the adoption took place, I'm not sure and haven't found yet but obviously Buck lived in a house with tons of transplanted nice things, nice Victorian furnishings--particularly a lovely grand piano (which I can remember being used in the 1950s in Calico Rock Public Schools for music class!) I have to think that Jim (or James) Lewallen died in the late 1930s or early 1940s. I remember family stories about my grandfather's sister (Ruth Lindsey's) husband Bert trying to convince Buck Lewallen that he needed to watch after his investments. Obviously, there was some land that went along with the house and the furnishings when Jim died all of that inheritance had gone to Buck. Unfortunately, he wasn't interested and ended up living most of his adult years that I know of, living in a little one room cabin on the property of Aunt Ruth and Uncle Bert Lindsey and working with some of their children in the timber and log cutting business. I do remember going to Buck's funeral, probably in the early 1960s. When Buck got back from military service, he gave his travel trunk to my grandfather Herbert Peck. I will look to see but I believe the name was spelled differently--possible Llwyllen and simply with the initial B. (I will check this to be certain about the spelling) But this has always been one of those stories I wish I had listened better to as a child when grown-ups were talking. Does anyone have a Jim (or James) in their data base who might fit this? Any information is appreciated and would be very helpful! Beth Peck Cooper
