    3. Thanks, Lanita! I just don't know if these Bennetts are connected or not. I know nothing except for Isabella and the rest is just speculation for now. If I find something that connects, I will get back to you. 1. Urma Shipman Boatwright
    2. Gerald Johnston
    3. In my reading today of the Christian Co. Family Histories, I came across Urma Shipman Boatwright's name. Can anyone tell me the origin of her name, Urma? I ask because of Urmal Roberts; born in Taney Co. in about 1900, to Wm. and Mary Roberts. Also, my grandmother was Urmal Mitchell Reece; daughter of Paley Reece and Martha E. Mitchell, of Dickens and Garrison. I have always wondered where the name Urmal came from; and since the two latter women were cousins, and also related to Urma; wonder if they might all three have been named for the same person? Urma Shipman is the youngest of the three women mentioned. Thanks! Jerry Johnston

    1. Bennett Folks
    2. Gerald Johnston
    3. Okay; I may be getting a little closer to my Bennett mystery solution; whatever ..... Can anyone tell me the children of Ephraim Bennett, Jr. and his siblings also? His youngest son was Charles Mitchell Bennett, Sr. 1807 - 1882. I wonder if he may have had a daughter or granddaughter named Mary Isabella, who married Wm. C. Mitchell, in Greene Co. They were later of Garrison. Isabella was also later married to Isaac Peacock, and may have been first of all married to a Stinson. I also show, form the CCo. book that there was a John Wesley Bennett; I wonder if anyone knows whom his parents and siblings were??? (1829 to 1900) the right age to be Isabella's brother. Isabella was a midwife; and my great-great-great-grandmother; matriarch to many Mitchell, Roberts, Workman, Shipman, Mapes, and other folks from the area. Let me know if any of you can help! Thanks! Jerry Johnston

    3. Shirley, Since you were born near Lebanon, MO, I am interested in your Chapmans. Were they from there also? My husband's MOTHER was a Chapman and they were from Polk County, MO (Pleasant Hope/Bolivar). Polk County is not too far from Lebanon. Are we talking about the same area regarding our Chapmans? If so, we might have a connection. Lanita Sconce Miller Wichita, KS

    3. I just wanted to comment on how much I've enjoyed reading the commentaries on this list. I am living in Colorado, but am orignally from SW Missouri. I spent most of my life in Carthage (Precious Moments) and spent six years in Cassville (Roaring River) . There haven't been a lot of family tidbits I can use, but have been amused with some of the Ozarkian language. I'm asked all the time what my accent is. It's not really southern and not really midwestern, but folks recognize I talk a little different. I just tell 'em I'm Ozarkian. (better than owning up to being just plain hick) On a trip home last summer for my parents fiftieth anniversay (yes people do stay together that long) I knew I was getting close to home when I heard a local radio station give the traffic report and then the traffic reporter told the dj, to "taker 'er easy" and the dj replied "I'll do 'er" It put a smile on my face for several miles. I love Colorado, but since I live near Denver, I miss the easy pace of back home. I had subscribed to this list because my Wright/Kissee/Jones families were found in Ozark, Douglas counties in Missouri and across the line in Fulton County, Arkansas. Vonda, keep cranking out the great stories and information. It keeps me close to my roots. Sherry Swarens Quade

    2. Wm Cross
    3. I hope it is not against the list rules to send this. This poem was sent to me and I thought I would pass it on. It is so true about genealogy. STRANGERS IN THE BOX (Author Unknown) Come, look with me inside this drawer, In this box I've often seen, At the pictures, black and white, Faces proud, still, and serene. I wish I knew the people, These strangers in the box, Their names and all their memories, Are lost among my socks. I wonder what their lives were like, How did they spend their days? What about their special times? I'll never know their ways. If only someone had taken time, To tell, who, what, where, and when, These faces of my heritage, Would come to life again. Could this become the fate, Of the pictures we take today? The faces and the memories, Someday to be passed away? Take time to save your stories, Seize the opportunity when it knocks, Or someday you and yours, Could be strangers in the box.

    3. <<Head shaking>> Well, Good Morning...! Okay, Jerry, I realize that <BG> you took some time off, plus you weren't in the middle of my Overstreet/Schwyhart Et. Al. research...LOL But I'm related to Butte Co. CA. That's right, the whole darn county...just about. A lot of folks left and went to OK and CA in the first decade of the 20th century. Better land, better jobs, apparently it looks something like the Ozarks...for just as they did during the 19th century, a scant few went first, then within a few years, it seems half the counties emptied out. For instance, I know the 1920 Stone Co. Census seems to be a big census, but there's a bunch of folks who were in 1910 who aren't in 1920--and it's not just because of the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918-1919. So I'm only half-joking when I say that the CA Death Index (CADI) at Rootsweb showed me the connection between southern MO and CA...it was massive emigration. And as for both of you--Caudle (any version) and Maggard are both Common Melungeon Surnames. I keep thinking I'll go get that put on the WRV site, but it's available elsewhere as well. My dad's got my N. Brent Kennedy book (turnabout's fair play, I know), but I know both those names and quite a few other WRV family names are Melungeon. Just because the surname exists in the family doesn't mean they're Melungeon, Larry--it means there's a possibility. I personally would like to find some Uncommon Melungeon Surnames...I think Phenix might be one. Or Dimond. Have a great Halloween! Vonda

    3. I have finally found my Bessie and Fred Caudle; but still need more information. They are in the Taney Co. census for 1910. From the Christian Co. Centennial History, it appears the Caudles went en masse to Fresno. Fred was the son of Shadrack Newton "Newt" Caudle and Lucy Ann Melton. I found this in the Melton section of the book. Fred's siblings were Bedford, Cora, Lola Melton, Joshua B. "Jay", Eartree Melton; and 4 others still living. Shadrack was the son of Joshua Caudle and Lida C. Tillman. I know Shadrack was a common name, but I have a preponderance of occurrences of it in my Mustain families -- I wonder if there is a connection there" I think the Mustains must also have been Melungeon -- therefore another connexion here. Now, I know these folks tie to many other families being researched by many of you. Please let me know if anyone can tell me anything else about them. By the way, Frederic Caudle was born in 1877 and Bessie was born in 1890. Does anyone know why the Caudles all seemed to go to Fresno at the same time? Thanks in advance!
