    1. [MO-AR-WRV] Isaac Peacock & Isabella Bennett (Mitchell) etc.
    2. Gerald Johnston
    3. I am trying to track down the burial place of Mary Isabel Bennett (Mitchell) Peacock. Isaac Peacock was her second husband. I do not know if she was buried at Chadwick, Christian Co., or Swansville, where may of the other Mitchells are buried, or not. Does anyone know where ole Isaac Peacock, b. in the early 1800s was buried? It could be anywhere in the Greene Co., MO area. Let me know if anyone has any idea out there. Thanks! 1. [MO-AR-WRV] Meltons
    2. Gerald Johnston
    3. I think these Meltons do possibly connect, the IN and TN folks, via their earlier connections in Pittsylvania Co., VA. I have connected them back in the early 1700s. This is via Crispin Shelton and his brother, Daniel; I think; they were both sons of Ralph, but there were five or six other kids too. These folks also tie to the Mustain folks of Greene and Dallas Counties, back to Ralph, etc. Not all of the Pittsylvania Co. Sheltons are the same folks. Mine were all Sheltons; others in the same era, early 1700s, had been Cheltons that changed the 'c' to an 's.' I have a file with lots of information on these folks if anyone is interested, I can send a gedcom or gen report. 2. I'm also interested in Meltons. My husband's great grandmother was a Melton on his father's side, and so was his great grandmother on his mother's side. His paternal great grandmother was Martha Jane Melton and on his maternal side, her name was Nicia Amlee Melton. These people lived in northern Arkansas (not far from Taney County!). Anyone have info on them? Beth Walker Shipman

She is improving, thanks to the many prayers and thoughts sent on her behalf! Don't forget, you Melton researchers--there were 2 families of Meltons, one from TN, one from IN. The ones who intermarried with the Bilyeus, Harps, and Davises were mostly in Taney county in MO, and in northern AR, with some spillover into Christian County, MO (which is where a lot of confusion comes in at). To the best of my knowledge, there isn't any real strong evidence that the 2 families were connected. The bunch I've researched in connection with my Bilyeus and etc, are from IN. 1. [MO-AR-WRV] tombstone mystery solved
    2. Vonda Sheets
    3. Howdy, folks! Well, somebody, somewhere, did a good "gen deed" and passed the Crunkleton tombstone information on the the right place. There was a Crunkleton family in Boone Co. AR, and Loretta's brother's wife wrote me Sunday. (I'm just now answering my mail--been busy) Loretta was buried in Crawford Cemetery, near Harrison, in Boone Co. AR. The stone--although I think it's in pretty good shape--was replaced some time ago, but no one knew what happened to the old stone. (Ever suspicious, I wonder if the new one was put up because the old one was gone?) Anyway, as soon as I get back the details, the stone will be returned to its rightful place, whether in the cemetery or in the possession of the family. Thanks to all who passed the information on--I'm not quite sure how Mrs. Crunkleton found out about it, she doesn't say--so I don't know where to pinpoint the helper. But whoever passed it on, I thank you! Vonda

    1. [MO-AR-WRV] Info needed
    2. Hello List, Ok, now I have been doing a lot of lurking, <BG> I know it seems but really I have been putting lots of info into my file. Now have gotten stuck on, probably, a silly thing to you all but gonna ask anyway. I have a copy of Administrator's Bonds for 1865. Only got a few names on it but my questions are as follows: Is the Adm. always a relative? Does anyone know a Louiza C. Wilson? Seems like I recognize the name but can't seem to find her in my information. Does any one know. Sorry to be so PITT-E-FUL but have not ever looked at papers like this before. Any help would be appreciated. Warmest Smiles, Pama

    3. Well, The Springfield paper didn't call me today, so I presume that means I was a little too outspoken...hmmmpf. They should hear my daddy sometimes. Inquiries about Ernie Deane's books led me to do some searching...and guess what I found? A link to the Mountaineer Bookstore...I'll be durned if us hillbillies just ain't gettin' right up-town, now...LOL You'll have to click a few times from the link below, but go to the Bookstore, and if you want an Ernie Deane book, type in "ernie deane" (without the quotes), and the 2 books they sell will come up. http://www.runningriver.com/ I plan to put a link to it from the website, one of dese days. I've also been informed I'm not the only one "het up" about the "one big Disneyland." Good. While Chris Myer's heart may be in the right place, the idea that we need a new theme when we had a perfectly good one prior to 1990 still burns me. It makes me madder when I realize "they" don't remember. Y'all can write to the editor of the Springfield News-Leader if you're of a mind to at mailto:letters@springfi.gannett.com I believe is the link. 3. I am upset. Oh, not at the lists, or anything like that. But all morning, ever since I read today's Springfield paper, my innards have been uptight and I have a headache. Here's the article. http://www.springfieldnews-leader.com/webextra/ip112800.html In it, Taney county and the city of Branson's planning people talk about how there's no one theme, nothing to pull the area together as a whole. Hello...? I don't know how many of you have visited Branson. Yes, you know I'm big on the Ozarks and what makes us special, but Branson isn't necessarily a part of the Ozarks anymore. When someone can build the ugliest tower in the world on top of Inspiration Point (where Wright wrote "The Shepherd of the Hills", recommended reading for anyone who had ancestors in the White River Valley around 1900); a "chateau" (isn't that French?) multi-story pink hotel on a bluff overlooking Table Rock Lake that doesn't even pretend to be Ozarks-oriented; when these things are allowed to happen, then no, we don't have a theme. We have a lack of respect for what made Branson possible-our background, our ancestors and our culture. Well, I wrote a short and not-so-sweet letter to the editor. Because we had a theme until that stuff started happening during the boom of the early 1990s. Pioneer, rustic, hillbilly, simple, easy, blend into the surroundings, nothing too ostentatious, nothing obviously European; except possibly the Tudor style of downtown Hollister. Boy. I might get some nasty mail. I finished a book by Ernie Deane last night called "Ozarks Country". Ernie Deane was a newspaper columnist, first for the "Arkansas Traveler" then for the Springdale (AR) Daily News. This book was a collection of various columns. It must have hit me hard, for Greg hollered this morning--asking what I'd dreamed about, and that I'd kicked him half the night. He's never done that before. The book was $7 at the Ozarks Mountaineer bookshop in Kirbyville. I would recommend it to anyone interested not only in genealogy, but the White River Valley and its history. (While I can't seem to keep genealogy separate from historical stuff, like preservation, some folks can.) This getting mad stuff is causing me to go gray. <BG> Vonda ListMom for MOTaney and MO-AR-WRV http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~moarwrv/

    1. [MO-AR-WRV] changing the settings-please read
    2. Vonda Sheets
    3. Hey, Good Mornin' to ya! On the Taney list, the subject of the subject line has come up. As listowner, I had/have the option of either allowing or disallowing the subject line. It is recommended by many of the busier list owners to not have the subject line--for various reasons--I don't particularly care one way or 't'other. We'll try it with the subject lines on both for a time. However, I already have the settings for "Reply To" set to have your replies to posts to return to the lists, not the individual (I might mention, against the suggestion of Rootsweb; again, that's where my own judgement on what's best for my lists came into play). Folks, this is where your options on reply come into play. I've got Outlook for a mailing program; it took some getting used to after Compuserve, but I managed to get used to it. On both Outlook and Compuserve, there are/were 2 reply buttons: 1) Reply to, for the individual, and 2) Reply to All. Different email programs send mail different ways--some folks post to the list, and you see their name and individual addys instead of "from MOTANEY" or "from MO-AR-WRV". I don't know the technical jargon for that, and I don't know that settings for that option can be changed. It is the email programs, not the lists, that cause that. I do know that the default for replies is back to the lists, but if you see the person's name instead of the list name in where it comes from, your reply is going to go to the individual, IF you hit "reply to". If you click on "Reply to All", it will go both to the individual and to the list. If you want to reply to the individual, click "Reply to". If you want to post your reply to the list, click "Reply to All". Of course, that means the person you're replying to is likely to get 2 copies, but that's a whole different set of problems, one I can't fix. If you don't want that person to get 2 copies, you can delete their addy in your reply. The way my mail is set up, I can't hit either button, which is why you seldom see "Re:" in my replies to querys/posts (I have to type it in). I have to do a whole new email, or it sits in my outbox forever--something to do with the fact that my main addy is "copper turtle" and our server is "peoplepc". I can't use either of my reply buttons. That also explains why I sometimes forget if I've replied to someone in response to a certain email, because I have no record of it. If you've not had any problems with your reply method, continue using it. If you have had problems with "reply" in regards to the list, find and click on "reply to all", okay? If you understand technical jargon and want to know why Rootsweb discourages having the default replies to the list, you can visit: http://www.unicom.com/pw/reply-to-harmful.html Personally, it was full of big words and I wasn't too clear on all the points for and against, but it is the argurment Rootsweb uses. 1. Logan Cem Update
    2. Vonda Sheets
    3. I promised Barbara I'd do it, and I'm a little slow, but getting there... The Logan Cemetery, currently surrounded by a subdivision called Country Bluff Estates, has been bounded by permanent markers. A fence is probably not necessary at this point, for boy-hidy, if these markers ain't permanent, I don't know what is... You can see a picture at http://www.geocities.com/soakbear/cemetery.htm Mary Lou Logan Davis, her husband Lawrence, and cousin Donnie Rantz built the markers over the past few months, coming down from Billings in Christian Co. to do so. (The Cem is, I think, just outside Branson city limits, although all surrounding it are a part of Branson) These markers have a footing of concrete, 1 foot deep, and are built of concrete and bricks. They are absolutely gorgeous, and classy to boot. I've not had the chance to go out and see them for myself, and I don't know what the folks next door think; but they look good from the pictures. The problem with Logan is that it is apparently county property, landlocked without a legal easement (there's a utility easement, of all things), and was not being maintained. As our older generation "graduates" (I like that term) to its reward, younger ones are not always picking up the slack. I know of some who are--Jeff Michel being one of them--but in general, some of these older cems aren't even known to younger generations. The developer of the subdivision, while apparently knowing of the cemetery, "assumed" there were no graves other than what was marked (hah!), and wasn't quite clear to folks on its exact boundaries. When the county surveyed the cem last May, the boundary line passed 18 inches from the deck/hot tub of the house next to it. Those folks, understandably, were not happy to lose what they believed to be their back yard. Since we believe there are graves down the hillside, in that "back yard", there wasn't a good compromise on parcel trade. The neighbors are agreeable to folks visiting the cem, however, and are decent people all in all. But I would imagine any arguments to be held in the future over the boundaries will be between the homeowners and the developer and real estate agent who are responsible. The cemetery is now safe, plainly marked, and on the GPS mapping system. It remains to us to figure out who is buried in there besides Logans, at least taking educated guesses. You would do it by the process of elimination, basically; if you know someone lived in the Fall Creek area, can't find them in another cemetery, and are pretty sure they died in Taney County, they could be buried in Logan. All sorts of congratulations to Barbara Logan, Mary Lou Davis (who is not online) and her family, and other Logan descendants. By going in and doing, they saved a fantastic piece of their history! 1. Crunkleton Tombstone and more...
    2. Vonda Sheets
    3. Howdy! Now that the Thanksgiving holiday weekend is coming to a close--I hope everyone got some more info out of their relatives! <BG> First of all, because I hope this information goes out to someone with PML who is researching the CRUNKLETON surname-- My uncle, who lives in Belton, MO, was out walking his part of the family land on Friday, and discovered a tombstone set up--probably for Halloween--on his fenceline, near a gravel turnaround. He and his son laid the tombstone down, and I heard about it last night. Greg and I went to "rescue" it today, for the surname is not a Taney County name, and even with all the newcomers into the area, there isn't a single CRUNKLETON listed in the phone book. Here's the info-- Loretta Crunkleton Born and Died Feb 5 1934 I seriously doubt this came from a Taney County cemetery; I don't recall ever seeing the surname in the whole White River Valley, to be honest. If ANYONE knows of a CRUNKLETON family, and maybe a missing stone from a cem, please contact me. We brought the stone home, and want to see it returned to its home. It is not a big stone, but it is still heavy. It looks to be made of cement. Here's the link to the pictures, viewable at "The Cemetery Corner" on the White River Valley site http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~moarwrv/cemetery_corner/crunkletonstone.html I did a search at Rootsweb for the surname, and it seems to be mostly in the southeast portion of the US, NC, GA, and AL. (one cem in MT popped up) It is possible it was a family who "passed through" Taney County during the Depression, but it still doesn't belong where it was found. The closest cemetery is a mile away, the Berry Cemetery on Hwy 65, and I'm fairly sure it doesn't go there. I have submitted it to "Missing Links," the Rootsweb newsletter; if I don't get any leads on it in the next couple of weeks, I'll see if I can get a reporter from the Springfield paper to do a short article on it. Greg and I met Mike Walker, a THURMAN descendant, for coffee and a ride today. Poor fella, he lives in the Kansas City area, and I didn't want to ask what he thought of our neck of the woods just yet. He got to meet much of my clan, except for all our kids; our daughter, my parents, my grandmother, two aunts and two uncles...that's kinda a rough thing to do to a feller who thought he was just getting a cup of coffee. He might have been sorta shell-shocked when he left, but he was game to take "the back way" to Springfield and catch Hwy 13 North, so he's probably okay! He is also researching LANDERS in Christian County. Those of you on the Taney list probably remember some of his recent posts. Nice guy! I really enjoy meeting y'all when you come to the Branson area...I inevitably get to take a drive/ride around the countryside, yak some, and have a good time all around. (Yes, I've been told I'm easy to keep content...) "Law Day 2001: Outlaw Roundup" is moving right along. May 19, 2001, at Shadow Rock Park in Forsyth, MO. Ingrid and I have found a director for the Bald Knobber Re-enactment; his name is Rick SWAN, and he's fantastic! Has ideas for most of the whole event, knows about everyone Greg and I don't, and is a ball of fire all the way around! <BG> Now, there are going to be various committees signed up at the next quarterly meeting, which is 10 Dec at the Friendship House (aka Rose O'Neill Tea Room) at College of the Ozarks. If you live in the area, please take part in this event by joining a committee and helping out. You don't have to be a member of the White River Valley Historical Society to do so, but it would help us keep in touch with you. If you don't live in the area, but still want to get involved...there are ways. You can donate money to the jail restoration, or to a certain part of "Outlaw Roundup". You can spread the word to folks in the counties covered by the Society you are in contact with. You could even make plans to attend "Outlaw Roundup" and get to meet lots of the folks on these lists...<BG> There will be a website specifically for the Society soon. I'll let you know. Hope everyone has a Great Holiday Season! Vonda ListMom for MOTaney and MO-AR-WRV http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~moarwrv/
