Hey, howdy! Well now, Greg has finally admitted that Netscape is a "fairly good" web page designer, and gone and put up a page or two at our gen site. LOL Poor man, he actually admits being married to me... He's still doctoring and adding stuff, but if you really want a gander at the man who had the nerve to marry me--he's a lucky man <BG>, I wasn't ever gonna do it again--you can check him out at the 2nd link below. Just click on Greg's name. I told you he was a mountain man. Pore fella, he's gotta put up with burgundy carpeting nowadays...and no, I didn't put it in the house, it came with it. (Not a good choice when you have indoor kids; I'm sure someone would turn me in if I didn't let them inside on occasion. Ingrid calls it "kid dandruff". Notice she's been quiet lately... BTW, there's to be a couple articles in the Springfield News-Leader about "Law Day 2001: Outlaw Roundup" on Monday or Tuesday. The link is http://www.ozarksnow.com That's "Ozarks Now", not "Ozark Snow" like I always read it. Can anyone tell me who the parents of these tow folks are? I have Andrew Jackson Mapes b. 1889-1899 and Erma Novella Bilyeu b. 14 Jul 1899 They had one son, Wm. Eugene Mapes, b. 16 Jul 1918, probably in Jasper Co., MO. Don Houk, this was from you, but you could not remember who they were, as it is from your old computer before 'the crash!' Thanks all! Thought you all would like to see this obit. This is the lady who was active on our lists as Vikki Allen and also used her grandmother's name, I think, sometimes, of Dema Paul. She was tied to families in the Taney Co. area and also to several over around Joplin, two of the areas where my folks also are. The obit is correct to say Newton Co. for the hospital, although most of Joplin is in Jasper Co. Now, First of all, thanks, Dolores for doing the work from your Prague OK book. There's some names I'm interested in, but I promised myself last week no more research until after Roundup. Secondly, the news I'd promised the other night (yes, what I left you hanging with)... Mary Jane Beale b May 1834 TN d 1878-1879, md John P. Yates. This family was predominantly Stone County, until later in the 19th century. Mary Jane was full Cherokee. Her daughter, Mary Ellen Yates Hammer Overstreet, passed this knowledge down to her children and grandchildren. Mary Ellen's 2nd husband, George Overstreet, was my 2xg grandfather, and he, too, was apparently full Cherokee. This is something my grandmother has been told all her life, as far as George Overstreet goes, but we just received confirmation of it in the past couple of weeks from the White River Band of Cherokee. Here's Mary Jane Beale Yates' husband and descendants: Descendants of John P. Yates Generation No. 1 1. SCOTTA RAMSEY, b. Abt. 1905. I believe that Tony Keith was bro to Florrence Keith, who md Amanda Oliver, d/o Frances Archie and John Oliver. Some of the Olivers are also Cherokee, if my sources are right. The Keiths were German, if my information is correct. Someone was asking about Ramsey information in connection with the Cherokee. This is what Ramseys I have. The Pitts family, the Shepard branch in particular, may also be Cherokee. Any time you run into total blanks on your brick walls, even with courthouse burnings and what not, you may be running into Cherokee or other NA heritage. It wasn't advertised, is even downright denied, but there ya go. And if Mr. Earl Maggard, who I had the privilege of meeting Tuesday night with Ingrid, is to be believed, the Taney County Maggard lines were Irish and Cherokee. Maggard is a common Melungeon surname, but in this case, the Melungeon, if it happened, is quite a few generations back! How's dat? <VBG> V ListMom for MOTaney and MO-AR-WRV http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~moarwrv/ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gregvonda/
So I called Ingrid, who is keeping a list of our donors to publish in the day's program. We whooped and hollered, then I headed down Forsyth Flats to a place that was supposed to have a horse or 2 we might be able to borrow for the play. This fella, Cork, and his wife, Andi, are neat. They were at lunch, and invited me in. I got started talking about the horses, and handed Cork the flyer, which was one we'd had printed up before we scrapped the petting zoo. I said something about that, and Cork says, "Why aren't you having the petting zoo?" I said that Dorotha'd been trying to find animals for months, that we'd scrapped it because it was getting too late, and we'd come up with other stuff for the kids to do. "Wal...what kind of animals you want? I got some goats you can have. There's some sheep out there, too. Gotta donkey. Why is it too late?" I'm rather on the slow side, but this was just too good to be true. Poor Dorotha, out in southern CA for a much-needed vacation, had been beating her head on brick walls for months. Now this fella and his animals are just falling into my lap. And no one in my bunch is with me to pinch me and tell me I'm dreaming. By the time I left, I'd gotten a gorgeous white stallion for someone in the play to ride; 2 goats; several sheep; a donkey for someone to ride; and pony rides for the kids, at $1 per ride. My rather active pranking came alive, and I called Ingrid again. This time, I asked if Rick was still there--they'd been holding a script meeting while I was out slaying dragons--and told her in a real serious tone that I needed to talk to the both of 'em. LOLOLOL When they were both on the phone, I asked if they were sitting down--apparently, Ingrid had told Rick that I must have bad news--and they were sitting down. Then I told them we had to change the publicity poster again, for we had a petting zoo for Sary's Farm (Dorotha's character in the play is Sary). Hee, hee. You could hear the relief 13 miles away, which was the distance I was from Ingrid's house. Before I left, Cork asked if there was anything else he could do for me. And that's been a common trait of all the folks getting involved with Outlaw Roundup. A couple of re-enactment cast members have painted the set walls, and they and another gal are emptying out their houses for props. I am a lucky gal, knowing so many fine people. A guy who was doing some remodeling on Cork's house was there, and filled out a membership form for the society, and wrote me a check. Seems he's been involved with jail restoration down in Texas, and he is familiar with grant writing. So he's onboard now, too, and he's gonna be in the play as an extra. (We still need men!) Of course, after all that, I went and told the Forsyth police chief we was gonna be firin' some guns during rehearsals next Monday and Friday nights, so he would be prepared for anyone calling and saying they hear gunfire. We're using caps/blanks, but you never know. What with some of the women screaming during the play, and with the gunfire, it could startle a right number of folks.<BG> Some really incredible, awesome days...what am I gonna do when it's over? Plan a concert for this summer, and then comes White River Valley Homecoming in October. You know what? We're not even gonna tell Dorotha that we got the animals for the petting zoo when she gets back Sunday...everyone involved, including her husband, seems to think that Saturday morning of the 19th is soon enough, when Cork pulls in and we send her over to the arena to help a feller out. Talk about prankin'...she's liable to either kiss me or kill me! If everyone shows up who says they're gonna, we're going to have well over 500 people there. I'm afraid to breathe when it comes to numbers. I'm so excited! Hey, Howdy! (do ya hear Minnie Pearl in there? <BG>) Well, this Outlaw Roundup has been a tremendous learning and life experience for me. I have met the most incredible people, learned a lot, worked my tail off (and yet still managed to gain weight? Ain't that weird? LOL) Nearly everyday, some miraculous thing takes place. For instance, I'm a big believer in "less hassle, less fuss" and simplifying things in life. Last week, before she left on a long-scheduled vacation, Dorotha Feuerborn called me. "Vonda, I've been trying for three months, and I just can't get any animals for the petting zoo. The goats I had have gotten sick, and no one wants to bring their regular farm animals, for fear of them overeating and getting the bloat. I don't know what to do." Now, Miss Dorotha is the director of the Kids' Activities for Outlaw Roundup, and she is also in the Bald Knobber Re-enactment. She has been extremely active in getting things donated for the kids' activities, and planning things for them to do. So I told her, "Look, it's two weeks off. It's not vital, let's just forget about it." So she, Jo (the historical society prez), Ingrid (my partner in nearly all these activities and a wonderful friend), and I met Tuesday night, and planned out games for the kids to play. Red Rover; Freeze Tag; Duck, Duck, Goose; kickball; the list goes on, and we only have 4 hours to worry about, right? There is a coloring contest (prizes from McDonald's); crafts in the way of making cardboard/popsicle stick fans and/or Bald Knobber hoods, and decorating them; Smokey the Bear; and so on. Them kids ain't gonna be bored, alright? Well, we'd already pretty much scrapped the hay/straw bale maze for the kids; no one stepped forward to either donate or offer to rent the necessary bales. (I'm gonna have to buy my own farm and raise and bale my own straw, I guess. uh, huh, I'm sure--NOT). Then, Wednesday (yesterday for those of you following me fairly close LOL), I went out towards Taneyville, and stopped in at a place that rents bales. We'd talked to him back in March, and the price was $1 to rent, $3.25 if any get broke. I still needed some for the hayrides, and to set about the park, even if I didn't get my maze. That nice man, Rick, told me it'd all be sitting in the barn, and to come out on Friday the 18th to get as many as I need (which I figure to be about 50 at this point). As long as I get them back the night of the 19th, it ain't gonna cost a thing. More to come... Hi Listmom. Keep up the informative and fun posts, etc. I used to live in the beautiful Ozarks and I love every tidbit. I wonder if you ever visit the history center in Berryville, Ark? I sure would like to get some info on a tornado that struck there when I was in Jr. high. I haven't been successful in requesting info from them and sure would appreciate some help. I cannot travel there in person. Thanks...Virginia RVWeld IBSSG researching ANDERSON,in Mo. Tn. and Va.JAMES in Mo. OLIVER in Madison co. and Carroll co.Ark and Tyrrell co. I just wanted to ask a question about the WRV. I was wondering if they would be interested in a story about my 3rd great-grandfather William R. Boyd who was a Public Administrator in Ozark. His brother-in-law Zach Johnson of course you all know as the man who hung a few of the Bald Knobbers. Zach married William's sister. William's daughter wrote in her diary about the day of the hanging which is in my fathers' book. I'll list the webpages I have some of this information on for those interested. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~lgboyd/d10.htm This is the family of Samuel Boyd and Priscilla Wood. Sam was living with his son...he was a judge. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~lgboyd/chapter2.htm towards the bottom of this chapter is the diary of william's daughter by his first wife martha f marley, evalina boyd. a few months ago i sent copies of letters from william boyd and samuel boyd to his brother who still lived in georgia (where our boyds came from) to the historical society in ozark and to mabel phillips the librarian in ozark. these contain some information about the country and schools in chrisitian county. hope you all enjoy and let me know if you would be interested in a write up on all this for the WRV. Hey, howdy... The big bad bug is gone--it's purt' nice, bein' married to one of dem dere puter techs--but the bad part is, he was lookin' over my shoulder this morning when I was composing that warning, and I got all flustered and didn't clarify things. And I've been corrected, so I'm lettin' y'all know... For one thing, it was an absolutely beautiful day in the Ozarks! (in spite of bugs and viruses) For another, that particular virus does not go around getting sent by replies to emails. It is sent to the addresses of the UNOPENED emails in your box, all on its own, nasty thing. For some reason, while Greg thinks that some of the e's sent by the virus went through, one program or another put a "bug" of its own in the addys that most were sent to, and so a lot of them were sent back with a warning from various "Postmasters" and didn't go through. Weird, but thar ya go... However, hitting "REPLY" to sender won't pass the virus--in this case--on. I hollered about that because folks sometimes don't realize that there is a difference in emails through the lists, and emails you receive from individuals. Attachments cannot go through Rootsweb--no way, no shape, no how--at least, that's what they tell me. Two different things, but clarification was needed, alright? End of lesson on subject matter which I honestly get confused on my own self sometimes. Some newbies who haven't been here long don't realize I tend to send rather chatty posts about the Ozarks and connected things, because some unfortunates have never been here, and don't realize how special the White River Valley is. I am real big on sharing events and other things about our culture and our background, for it helps folks in general to understand why their people lived here. There are many folks who are drawn to this area, through visits on vacations, and eventually move here. After a while, they get to doing genealogy, and they find out their great-grandparents lived here, often only a handful of miles from where they themselves now live. You wouldn't believe how many times it's happened. I'm lucky in that my people were Cherokee, lived here a number of years before the Trail of Tears, and several branches still live here (such as my own). Some went on to Oklahoma after statehood, and I do believe I am kin to half of Butte Co. CA (and I've never been there, but hear tell it is similar in mountainous appearance to the Ozarks--is that true?) Ennyways, that's why I talk about things like Outlaw Roundup. There are folks on these lists who are planning to attend, and are planning to meet distant kin which they've never before seen at the event, and that's the reason I'm working so hard to make it fun in the first place. (I think!) And genealogy is one reason we are doing it as well. For instance, many people, like my own, have Cherokee in their background. The White River Band of Cherokee will be at Outlaw Roundup, with information and applications, and they are really excited about meeting others with ancestors like their own--or who may be their own. Other WRV historical societies and the local FHC will also be there, to start people out on finding their roots. I honestly don't see how a person can be interested in genealogy, and not branch out into other connected areas, such as historical events, cemetery preservation, that sort of thing. If you don't live where your people did, I believe that what goes around comes around--it sure has in my life--and by getting involved with your local societies and groups, maybe someone will be getting involved where your people were. (Confused yet? Shoulda been me, trying to figure out what point I was trying to say...) But that's me, and some folks don't wonder how come another valley a few miles away has people in it who married in the same patterns, that sort of thing. Or why a family that ended up in CA or AZ has a picture of a family from MO or AR when no one knows who it is. That's why. By passing around what little I know, I learn a lot from folks like y'all. Speaking of which, I've got some news I'm gonna save for a future post...(that's right, I'm leaving you hanging...things are falling so neatly into place with Outlaw Roundup, I gotta be onery somewheres...) To everyone on my lists-- Pass this on! Call people if necessary! The "badtrans" virus is nasty--I got it from a person last night, and it is likely to shut down the Rootsweb system for a time. This virus attacks all unopened emails in your inbox. The addys from the unopened emails get slammed with a lot of e's, if you open the attachment. Unfortunately, I only opened 2 or 3 e's last night, thinking I was smart to wait until this morning. When I started downloading mail this morning, and my program said I had over 400 messages, something was wrong, and I shut it down immediately. Greg got it fixed. We use Norton and if you have not run an update lately, you will need to do so if you get the bug. Go to http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ and find the "w32.badtrans.13312@mm." Get it fixed. My system sent out, or tried to send out, nearly 4,000 emails during the short time I had Outlook open last night. The reason this passes on--and I have stressed this before, and I'm yelling now--folks hit the "reply" button that does not send the post through Rootsweb. I'm sure you have noticed in your inbox that some folks' mail seems to come straight from them, and some from the list. If it comes from the list, since attachments CAN NOT go through Rootsweb, it will fail--you won't get it. If it comes from individuals, you can get viruses. DO NOT HIT REPLY. Use the post address if you are going to respond to a post (MO-Taney or MO--AR-WRV -L), cut and paste the subject line (put an "re:" if you must) and respond that way. By clicking on "Reply", you stand a chance of passing the virus on, not aware you are doing so. DO NOT OPEN ANY attachments from anyone at this time. The email, which is why I got it, says, "this is a picture I want to share with you." It is not a matter of trusting or not trusting the person--it is a matter of not knowing what you have received. So don't send anyone any pictures for a while. Emails from me are safe after 11 AM today (7 May). Jerry, 'tis a wonderful gift, indeed, and how very fortunate you are! Does make one wonder about the Divine guidance we receive - so often unknowingly - doesn't it?
What a wonderful gift, You are very fortunate.

I got a treasure from my grandmother yesterday. After all the 'hell' I have been through he last two weeks, over my computer virus; this could not have come at a better time! My mother was sorting through some of her file cabinets. She had a section of family things in one that she had not looked through for several years. Of course she knew how much I have been involved in genealogy for the past 25 years, and especially over the last year and a half. I already had my grandmother's birthday book, and the ones she had given each of her sisters and her mother-in-law. It does not compare with what mother found yesterday. A small spiral bound notebook, in Grandmother Johnston's own handwriting, of family history work she put together 60 years ago. It has middle names and complete dates of birth of my the siblings of my dad's four grandparents. A lot of it is information long forgotten, and that no one had remembered. It is a precious gift she had worked on in her own meticulous handwriting, then typed up formally on pages she was putting together in the back. She had continued to add updates in it, up until the early 1960s, when my grandfather died. When he did, she did also, spiritually. Although she lived another 15 years, the only remaining interests she had were my brother and I, plus our parents. It is so special to have this and be able to see how she shared the same fascination and pride over her family. I am holding it now, and I know that only those of you on these lists can understand the connection I have with this tiny woman, full of love and grace. She made this for my dad, to have and pass on. Now he and I can look through it and continue it, adding our own pages at the back, for others to share too. Edith Mae Ferguson Johnston would be 96 years old this June 18th. It is eerie to know that my mother pulled this long forgotten treasure, out of the back of a drawer of special, archived keepsakes, on the day that Edith's husband would have been 95.
