    3. Hi folks, Just want to clarify the death record situation for the State of Minnesota - Death records are now $10.00 per certified and $10.00 per uncertified ( or plain copy as the clerks call it.) If you are a genealogist and do not need a certified copy, always order a plain copy. This means you will get the copy of the original document - handwriting, signatures and all. St. Louis County stamps it "For Genealogical Use Only" and other counties put their own stamp on it or none at all. But if you order a certified copy, you will get a transcribed record on fancy paper with very minimal information. Not at all useful for a genealogist. You also need to have a notarized letter if sending for one or identification if getting one in person. Birth records have also gone down in their rates. $13.00 for a certified record and (I believe) $10.00 per plain copy. Same thing is true when ordering birth records as death records. I have this from the County Recorder, Mark Monacelli, at the St. Louis County Courthouse and the State of Minnesota. All counties are to go by these same rules.
