Dee, what is the surname you are working on? when looking into the Melungeon theory i bought a book by an N. Brent Kennedy, "The Melungeons, The Resurrection of a Proud People" turns out i am a distant cousin of his but one thing i got a kick out of is that some members of one of his lines moved from "Coeburn Mountain" in Virginia to Duluth, Mn. the name is NASH. after corresponding with him i sent him the page from the phone book of Nashes but i don't know if he ever checked them out. i have thought to do it to but have not. family tradition refers to nationalities being French, "Black Dutch", Scot-Irish, English and Indian. Melungeons were very discrimated against and on some census records referred to as "Free People of Color" I know I was always told my Great Grandmother was 1/2 Cherokee and her mother full-blooded Cherokee. but in researching there is absolutely nothing that would connect them to the Indians. its sure been fun learning about these people. good luck in your search....marilyn ----- Original Message ----- From: "Darlene S Poff" <deespoff@galaxyinternet.net> To: <MNSTLOUI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 22, 2001 9:56 PM Subject: Re: [MNSTLOUI] Re: mixed marriages > Interesting discussion.
