I'm looking for information on the death of Arthur A. Miller, died in 1949 or 1950, probably in Duluth. He was married to Ina Nelson, and had 5 children: James, Thomas, William, Nancy, and Susan. He's not listed in the SSDI, and I've gotten very little information from his widow, my former mother-in-law. His parents were William A. Miller and Susan Conlan. Any information on this family will be very helpful. Thank you. Edna King-Miller Atascadero, CA pikake@tcsn.net.
If anyone has access to a circa 1930 Duluth directory, I'd like whatever info is contained for: Mack J. Patenaude Mrs. Della Patenaude residence 323 No. 80th Ave. W., Duluth, MN Della died 14 May 1930 and both were living in Duluth at that time. Any info is very much appreciated! Being kind of a geezer, I'll put my two cents in here. There was a home for unwed mothers in the 50's at 13th ave E. and 9th St. I never knew who ran it. It was one of those things that were not talked about those days, especially to parents. The girls who stayed there were quite friendly to young boys, as I recall. They called to us from their upper floor windows. I doubt that they were ever allowed out of doors. At 12th Avenue E, above Kenwood was the Corpus Christi Carmelite Convent. It had many Incarnations. It started out as a home for crippled children and ultimately became Corpus Christi, then something else, then sold to a Protestant group, and then apparently became a Montessori school as mentioned below. The original Duluth Catholic Cemetery was located near it. It was abandoned in the 1890's and all bodies were ultimately moved to the new Calvary or to the new Polish Cemetery. Or so they say. Some fairly reputable people have told me that some bodies were probably never moved. I understand they are building homes there now. Could the place you mentioned on 12th Avenue East be what I remember being called Carmel Heights? I grew up near there and remember being told that it was originally a convent and later a home for "unwed mothers" (that would've been in the late 60's or early 70's). Maybe Shirley can confirm this but I believe that the original Calvary Cemetary was located behind there. When we were kids, we'd picnic on the hill behind Carmel Heights (now a montessori school) and I remember seeing a headstone on the hill. > > Subject: [MNSTLOUI] LOOKING FOR SOME HELP > Date: Mon, 20 Aug 2001 21:28:16 -0500 > From: "Marilyn Deloach Elliott" <mightymare@prodigy.net> > To: MNSTLOUI-L@rootsweb.com > > 1909...would there have been a home where an illegitimate child would have been born or placed? Listers, The montessori school was originally Thomas Feigh Hospital for Crippled Children (source: Catholic Outlook 1914). It became Corpus Christie House around 1920 (Catholic Outlook 1926) and at the same time The Thrid Order of St. Dominic came to Duluth - they also lived there. Yes, old Calvary Cemetery was very near to that building. I cannot prove it but when I was growing up, the unwed mother's home was at 12th ave E and 9th St and I believe it was called Carmel Heights. The Corpus Christie house much, much further up 12th AVe. E (at the very top near High Street). Sorry that won't help those of you not from Duluth. Any records from either entity are not available to be searched (I have been told) and either with the Diocese of Duluth or St. Louis County. Hope this helps some. Kathy N.

St. James Children's Home in Woodland was established in 1909. They had 25 children placed at the Orphanage that year. In 1916, it was renamed, St. John's Orphan Home until 1956. Over the years it served children who were orphaned as well as children whose parents could not care for them during the Depression. Today, the building is called Woodland Hills, a private, nonprofit agency offering residential treatment for troubled youth. This information was taken from an article that was in the Duluth News Tribune on May 9, 2001. This could have been the facility that the child was taken to. Thank you. Also, for those who might be interested, Outdoor magazine recently identified Duluth has recently been identified as one of the best places to retire. Don't know if anyone is interested...but maybe. www.duluth.8m.com has lots of old photos and postcards of Duluth, MN kind of neat Marilyn
I can't tell you about that location, but I do know it was fairly universal. I seem to remember it coming under discussion in Luzerne, PA, and Philadelphia, PA. Frequently! OK, I have one. Has anyone heard of the Knights of Phythias Lodge (Existed in 1946) in Eveleth? My Grandfather, John Dormer, belonged and I am hopeful that I can get some information from the lodge if it still exists. ----- Original Message ----- From: "lbolivar" <lbolivar@direct.ca> To: <MNSTLOUI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 04, 2001 11:53 PM Subject: [MNSTLOUI] UAOD - Thanks > Thank you to everyone who sent suggestions on where to look for information. Another question. Does anyone know the name of the priest who head the Holy Family Church on West Third Street (former St. Jeans and St. Peter and Paul Parishes)? Thanks. Dorothy
Thank you to everyone who sent suggestions on where to look for information. Maybe I'll find that membership list to accompany grandpa's beautiful lodge pin that was given to me. Lee
Does anyone know who might now hold the records for the Olson and Hoppenyan Funeral Home and also the Olson and Crawford Funeral Home? It seems neither are no longer in business. Thank you. Dorothy
If you use the Search Engine 'Google' and type in "United Ancient Order of Druids", you will find more information than you will want. I thought there was a web site that listed all the various organizations (e.g. IOOF). Does anyone know what it is? lbolivar wrote: > Does anyone have information on the United Ancient Order of Druids? > > My grandfather and a great uncle were members of the local 'grove' some time during the period they lived in Virginia (1895-1910). Hi all! Is there anyone out there that has access to the archives & obituaries of the Duluth News on-line? http://web.duluthnews.com/ In such a case I'd be really gretaful if you could look-up, copy and send me the obituary for Roy A. Nopola, who died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, 83 y.o. /greetings Hakan Bergstrom Brussels, Belgium
Did Virginia, Minnesota have a newspaper back in 1911? If so, I am looking for the obituary of a Hiram Walker who died on 30 January 1911 in Virginia, Minnesota. Would his obit have run in the Duluth, Minnesota newspaper as well? If there is anyone in St. Louis County, Minnesota who could possibly look up this obit, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. The g-grandson of Hiram Walker. Dan Walker ___________________________________________________ GO.com Mail Get Your Free, Private E-mail at http://mail.go.com
