Bold in Oakland CA contains the reference to an incident at the Philipp Bold saloon in Cold Spring. My grandfather, Jacob H. Bold was a brother to John L. Bold, Sr. Serena and Sr. Kiliana (Mary) Bold. A third sister was Sister Ludmila Bold, all St. Joseph Benedictines. Mrs. John Krier, mentioned in the letter also, was the eldest Bold sibling, Theresia Bold Krier. There were two sisters in the same family named Theresia, also two daughters named Elizabeth. I would like to know where this particular Mike Lardy fits in the Lardy genealogy (birth, death, parentage, descent) and the subsequent history of the Thomey family. I include the entire letter because of its local color and possible interest to others. Letter from Sr. Serena Bold, OSB, St. Cloud Hospital, St. Cloud MN to her brother John L. Bold at 1934-36th Avenue, Oakland CA: "My last report to you in regard to the Krier Family: Margaret died January 2, (1940) 4:45 pm at the St. Cloud Hospital being brought in a diabetic coma Saturday 9:30 am and was conscious only by flashes but responded just wonderfully to the treatments so that I was quite certain she would recover although she had a blood sugar of 700 hundred the normal being about 140, but it was bronchopneumonia that took her. She died peacefully and seemed happy to go and meet the rest. She had remarked several times: "Now I am all alone, I miss Kate very much but do not wish her back and I am glad to see it that she gets all that can be done for her." Kate was most patient, I told her nurse to speak to her on meriting graces through her illness, but she answered: "Kate could really not be anymore patient than she is." The family is wiped out. They are all buried aside of Rev. Fr. Krier at Cold Spring, who died January 19, 1902 at Tucson Arizona. Theresa died in St. Cloud, March 30! , 1934, Anna died February 21, 1937, Kate died at St. Joseph's Home, October 31, 1939, and Margaret died January 2, 1940. Mr. (John) Krier has his Mother and four of the children aside him at Marty, the Peal Lake parish. They still have the farm near Peal Lake on which Barney Maus had been renter for about 34 years and now since Anna's death they have Celestine Barg whose wife is a sister to Mrs. Wm. Raden, the family they used to live in rent, in the double house of old man Raden. Margaret had been advised by her attorney not to sell the farm and had her insert into her own will that the farm could not be sold until Kate dies which was fortunately before Margaret died so as to let her take care of the affairs. She had a few grievences with the renter whom she then put off. At the time he offered her $5,000.00 for it and when she did not yield he told her he would give her $5,500.00 cash but she was vexed at his manner in which he treated her and so would not let hi! m have it. At any rate she said the farm should not be sold before th ey are all gone, which I believe was a wise plan. Margaret appointed Tom Buhl, Theresa Koll's husband her administrator. Her will gives her Mother 100 Holy Masses, her Father 50 Holy Masses, Rev. Father Krier 50 Holy Masses, Anna Krier 150 Holy Masses, Kate Krier 150 Holy Masses, and for herself 200 Holy Masses, these for herself she wishes to have said as soon as possible, all others are to be given to poor missions, All her belongings as trunks, suitcases, gold watch, etc,m go to Theresa Koll and after her expenses are paid all that remains goes to the Society of the Sacred Heart, Missouri. Mr. Buhl thinks of borrowing the money and pay off all indebtedness and leave the farm until convenient to sell it since they have a good renter on it. It seems to me they had sold twenty acres at one time so the farm at present would be about 120 acres. The farm is located at south side of Pearl Lake ? which I am not certain of. I must see her attorney sometime about it although I know things are taken care of. Mr. Pierre Thomey, a son of Nick Thomey whose father had been killed in Cold Spring by M! ike Lardy or rather he died from the effects of the hammer blows he got. I remember well when Mother (Anna Margaretha Neis Bold, 1830-1893) told Father (Philipp Bold Jr., 1823-1889) to get these men out of the saloon and lock the doors, "Philipp, das gebt nichts guttes." Now I must tell you of our Sister Kiliana, when she wrote me for Christmas she said, I know you are as happy as any human being can be so I am not able to add anything to your happiness. You and brother John are alike, the gab is good but the legs are bad. Never mind, when we get to California again we will pay her back for that remark, we will go to the "Bier Garten" and just won't take her along!"
