He immigrated by himself at the age of 17. I believe he came over on the ship Sorrento from Hamburg landing in NY on 7/1/1886. His name on the register is Paul Hoppe a farmer from Prussia destination Wisconsin. He married Helen (Heleana) Tomcheski (Tomaszewski) 11/27/1896 in Little Falls, Minnesota. His father's name was John and his mother was Josephine Brezka (Breza). I do not believe his parents came over. Paul and Heleana had 4 children: Gertrude, Frank (my grandfather), Michael, and Marian. I have the Morrison County census for 1900 and 1905 . The spelling of the last name was listed as Hapka. When the spelling changed I do not know. I was told my great grandfather was a brewmaster and had his own saloon in the Little Falls area. Paul's wife is a mystery. I know she is related to Alex and Mary Tomcheski who attended St. Stan's Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN. Mary's maiden name! was Sobkoviak (Sobiescek)). They had at least 2 daughters Rosalia (Rose) and Anna. Alex's father was Cheg or Aug. I can't read the death certificate and his mother was Agnes Sufer (Safarz). If you see anything that looks familiar or can be of help, please let me know. Thank you Diana I have reference to a Steinbach Family with the Tembruells who settled in Little Falls, Pierz, MN area.

Go to our web site. MNSCAG and find Obits in St. Cloud Daily Times or go to the St. Cloud Regional library Web site for their index. You still will have to request a copy of the obit and they are probably on Microfilm at MN Historical Society. Then I went to Rootsweb's SSDI seach and turned him up with a last residence of Braham, Isanti County, MN. http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi?lastname=Fifield&firstname=Marvin&nt=exact I also searched the St. Cloud Times Index -- http://grrl10.grrl.lib.mn.us:8080/index.htm -- and couldn't locate him in the appropriate obit index. It's possible he either didn't die in the St. Cloud area, or get into the obits of the St. Cloud Times, but it's possible that he really may have died in Braham area.

Hey, Been sometime since I've posted here, but rest assured I've been reading the posts that have been coming through. Anyway I found out that Rootsweb.com has Internet Relay Chat. I'm thinking that it might be a decent idea to designate a day or days out of each month to have Stearns researchers gather online with the idea that some realtime discussion could take place regarding genealogy in the county. If you have an irc client already, here's the url irc://irc.rootsweb.com/#mnstearn I use Colloquy for my Mac -- http://colloquy.info/ Windows users might like mIRC -- http://www.mirc.com/ There are bunches of others, of course. If this is something that you might be interested in, grab a client and get on the #mnstearn channel. Then drop me a line on the irc channel indicating which day or days of each month most interests you. Naturally, if nobody comes online and sends me a message, then this idea won't go very far. If you have any questions about this, email me off list. See ya, Darrell -- Schulte | Braun | Nathe | Schoenberg | Caspers | Gerads | Stroeing | Minnerath

I imagine you have this information from the cemetery listing for Stearns County. But unfortunately this is something I have been able to obtain already (in fact, I have been to the grave sites). My big gap and roadblock are to find Gottlieb's birthplace. No sources I have checked have given me this. I have checked several parish records, the Wuerttemberg Emigration index, Baden Wurttemberg emigration list, ship arrivals (he departed from Havre, France, and I tried to check sources there too), census records, homestead records, obituary (Melrose paper), family contacts. etc. The one big hope in posting in Stearns County is that perhaps some family member I haven't contacted could have some unknown information. Bernard Koch, Gottlieb's son, married Mary ENNEKING and had a large family, but no one I have phoned or written has been able to help as of yet. Thank you if you have any further ideas or leads. Heinr (Johann Heinrich) Grunding/Gruending was my grandfather and he married Mary Elisabeth Josephine Peters in 1902 Spring Hill Twp, Stearns County, Minnesota. They eventually homesteaded in Saskatchewan, Canada and are buried here. Anyone else researching this family and their descendents? Diane in Saskatchewan, Canada
The name that you have with a questionable spelling is very likely Biggerstaff. For other Biggerstaffs look in Wright County (Elizabeth in Clearwater Township) and Sherburne County (Ella, John and Samuel in Haven Township). I see a James Biggerstaff in St. Cloud (city). Check out the GenWeb sites for all three counties. Gottlieb Koch was born about 1831-33 somewhere in the Kingdom of Wuerttemberg, Germany. Where is the big question. His parents, according to wedding information, were Michael and Sophia, but that's all I know. He settled in the Melrose area by 1866, but emigrated in 1853 landing in N.Y. Where he was during the period of 1853-1866 is unknown. I suspect it was Ohio (near some of the BARTHLE family who later settled near him in Stearns County). One child of Gottlieb Koch and wife Regina SCHWIEP / SWEEP was named George M. KOCH, and so I suspect Michael's full name was Georg Michael KOCH. Families of Bernard Koch, Gottlieb's son, with a large family should also be interested in this search. Any help would be appreciated. Are there any relatives or friends who might help, especially ones near or in Stearns County?
