They arrived in the US in 1871 from Prussia. I have them on a 1880 Stearns Ct. MN census but one daughter Elise was 4 when they arrived is not on the census. Since the 1890 census is not available I had to check out the 1900 and did not find them on that census. I did find their two sons who headed west. They were on the 1900 census in Washington State. My first post was to know what Catholic church would be in that area in that time period or the Diocese of the area to see if they have records. I have found other Sura's in the area but have not been able to conncect them to mind.

Since there isn't much of a 1890 census I had to look for them in 1900 and did not find the parents or Elise mentioned but was able to track 2 sons who came west.

Where does the SURA surname come in? Is there also some connection to the state of Connecticut, or are you using "CT" to indicate "county?"

His father's name was Joseph and Joseph was born around 1818. The family arrived in the USA May 11, 1868 aboard the Erin. Joseph arrived with 6 children..Peter, Catha 1 b. Oct. 7, 1850, Johann b. March 25, 1855, Anna Maria b. March 27, 1857, Catha 2 b. April 2, 1861 and Cath 3 b. September 17, 1863(ships log says Maria; permission to immigrate says Catha3). Peter settled in Racine County, Wisconsin. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any of the others. My grandmother had a picture and on the back is written Mary Wangerin - dad's sister...so I can only assume one of the girls became Mary Wangerin. I found a Mary Wangerin in the Wisconsin census b April 1861 and it states she immigrated in 1866. The family's permission to immigrate is dated 1866, so this could be a connection. Any connections?

My great grandpa was Estel Ephraim Whitney (through his second wife). I just wanted to let you know that the Stearns History Museum has a Cossairt book that has a Winslow history in it. It also has a picture of Celestia and her husband Simon as well as a picture with 2 of her children and Benjamin H. Winslow, and other pictures of her children/family. Other pictures in the book are just Benjamin and just Betsy (Goss) Winslow, their gravestone, Thomas and Ann Tyler Goss, and the gravestone of John N and Ann S Winslow. Since I am not in the area I paid to have them look up information for me. I took pictures of the pages they sent me of these pictures (something is wrong with my scanner) and if they turn out I will happily e-mail them to you if you would like. Just let me know if you would like them and where to e-mail them. Sincerely, Kristy

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/TJB.2ACI/1682 Message Board Post: DIED ON THE TRAIN. William Chisholm, of Paynesville, Dies While on His Way Home. ______________________ Death under very sad circumstances occurred on the Northern Pacific train, which reached here at one o'clock this afternoon. William Chisholm, of Paynesville, suffering from consumption, last year went to the coast, accompanied by his wife and child. The change of climate did not benefit him and wishing to return home before he died he started on the return journey about a month ago. His father and other relatives expected that he would reach St. Cloud three weeks ago and have been in the city almost constantly since then. But the washouts on the railroads detained the sick man and his family at Hope, Idaho, until a few days ago. In the meantime he continued to fail and this morning shortly after the train left Fargo he died. He was an Odd Fellow, and as there were several members of that order on the train everything possible to aid the bereaved wife was done. An undertaker took charge of the body when the train reached St. Cloud, and the remains will be taken to Pay! nesville tonight for burial. The father of the deceased is in St. Cloud and met Mrs. Chisholm at the station (St. Cloud Daily Times, 23 June 1894, 2).

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/TJB.2ACI/732.753.1.3.1 Message Board Post: Mary Katrina Jax was born 30 Nov 1836 in Colverath (Kolverath) or Mannebach Germany, daughter of Anna Maria Simon and Nikolaus Jax. She was a sister to my great-great grandmother Margaretha Jax (b 19 Oct 1855), who became Mrs. Michael P. Meyer and immigrated later than your ancestors. Margaret & Michael lived for a short while in Stearns Co MN and then moved to Pierz, Morrison County, MN. Your ancestor, Maria Katharina Jax, married Anton Hassling 14 Jan 1868 in Retterath, Germany. This was Mr. Hassling's second marriage. He first was married to Margarethe Diederich, and if my assumptions are correct, she is the mother of your ancestor. They had 6 children and 5 of them have death dates in the BOOK OF RETTERATH I am using, but Maria Hassling, born 6/08/1860, appears to have survived. Mr. Hassling's first wife died 30 Oct 1867 and two months later Mr. Hassling married Maria Katharina Jax. She was 32 years old at the time and he was about 43. They had a double wedding with he! r sister, Anna Barbara Jax and Joannes Mand, on 14 Jan 1868 in Retterath. (These two immigrated and also lived in Pierz). Anton Hassling age 46, his spouse Marie, age 34 and two children arrived on the ship Thuringia on 13 June 1871. There was an unnamed 9 year old female and a two year old boy named "Joh" listed on the ship roster. By the way, Anton Hassling was born about 1825 (my calculation) possibly in the town of Brücktal, Germany, his parents were Johannes Hassling and Anna Catharina Theisen. I have more on them from this book. Please contact me directly for more good information. The name SIMONIS is a very common name in the Retterath, Germany parish. If you give me the particulars I can see if you've hit pay dirt for that name also. By the way, a distant relative has recently gone back to Germany and found Jax relatives still living in this town and there are some very helpful German researchers helping us. We must share more... Write again privately.
