What are everyone's favorite cemetery sources for the Paynesville area of Stearns county? I live in New Jersey and must interlibrary loan my sources. I would like to see some cemetery indexes and more. Please list titles and authors. Since I live "way out in Washington State" I use the "Index to Gravestones of Stearns County, Minnesota" that is on a CD. I purchased it from the research center at the museum in St. Cloud. It was put together by members of the St. Cloud Area Genealogists ... and was in "print form" before being put on CD for computer usage. I used it on my laptop PC while traveling through Stearns County and visiting cemeteries last fall. I have discovered a story on the Paynesville Area Historical Society's web site about Blind Bill Albright. This was my G-G-Grandmother's brother. Her parents and two siblings lived in Paynesville from about 1865 forward. I am related to two families in the Stearns county area of Paynesville. My G-Grandmother was Emelie (Albright) Buechner. Her sister was named Caroline (Albright) Nehring. She married August F. Nehring. They lived in Paynesville. William Albright (Blind Bill) was a broom maker who also lived in this town. He was involved in many music organizations in the late 1800s to early 20th century. He also gave music lessons. I would like to correspond with anyone researching these names. If anyone knows the person who wrote the article about Blind Bill on the Paynesville Area Historical Society web site, I would like to find out what the sources were for the article. The person who wrote the article was named Connie Williams. I would like to contact her. Does anyone know how I might do so? Does anyone have a Point-of-Contact (historian) for the Paynesvillle Area Historical Society? I have the address but would like to direct a letter to a specific person if I could. Can anyone help? Here is an outline of the Albright (Albrecht- original spelling) family: Descendants of Ernst Albrecht (Albright) 1 Ernst Albrecht (Albright) 1816 - 1880 .. +Caroline Krueger 1815 - 1900 ......... 2 Emilie Elizabeth Albright 1840 - 1919 ............. +John Frederick Buechner 1836 - 1915 ......... 2 Augusta Albright 1843 - ......... 2 William F. Albright 1850 - 1900 (Blind Bill) ......... 2 Caroline L. Albright 1855 - ............. +August Ferdinand Nehring 1849 - ......... 2 Robert Albright 1858 - Is anyone doing research on these names that is from Stearns County? In an obituary from the Paynesville Press it stated that Mrs. Fred Schmiginski (this should be Amelia Wagner) died on Oct 22 at her home in St. Cloud. She was born 14 May 1863 in Germany, coming to Minnesota via Canada. Among the survivors is listed a sister as being Mrs. William Hein of Paynesville. Anyone acquainted with a Mrs. William Hein? I would love to have information on her. > In the 1900 Census of Stearns County, ED #164, there is a Paynesville > Village and a New Paynesville Village. How were these two different? > Are they now one town? They were evidently both in Paynesville > Township. Audrey - Here is what Mitchell's (1915) "History of Stearns County" says: "The village of Paynesville was regularly organized as a village in 1887. The village of New Paynesville was organized in 1890. Between those two years, the Great Northern and the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie Railroad companies built their lines of road into this section, the former locating its station about one mile north and the latter placing its depot grounds about one mile east of Paynesville. A contest was at once on between the inhabitants of the two villages. This continued for several years, during which the "Soo" town gradually obtained the lead. In the fall of 1904 Paynesville was attached to New Paynesville, making a village now having a population of probably twelve hundred people. In March, 1905, the name of New Paynesville was changed by popular vote to Paynesville, and under the historic name the metropolis of Southwestern Stearns is building and making good." Tom
In the 1900 Census of Stearns County, ED #164, there is a Paynesville Village and a New Paynesville Village. How were these two different? Are they now one town? They were evidently both in Paynesville Township. Thanks in advance. Super Job Lisa!!! I found one of my ancestors on the Grove census. Millwood won't work but I am sure Darrell will fix the link. I would be happy to transcribe some townships if I had the census. Where does one obtain these? Love all the maps and the hard work of everyone. You are very much appreciated!! Question: I just received some copies of old photos that were taken in Melrose by "Clark"? I was wondering if anyone would care to take a guess at the time period of the photos? I can scan and send them to whomever wants to take a stab at it. These photos are unidentified. My aunt seems to think that the man is GGgrandfather Benedict because he is wearing a service medal. I disagree because I think the person is in his 30s or 40s and the time period is about 1890, but then I don't know. I would very much appreciate anyones input. Howdy folks -- announcement time. 1880 Federal Census [10 May 2001] Lisa Gerving has contributed her transcriptions of the Millwood and Grove Townships 1880 Federal Census. I've made them available in PDF format. Once they reach the USGenWeb Census archives, links to those documents will be created. In the meantime, check them out at: Millwood and Grove. Transcribing census information is a difficult job. Tremendous effort Lisa -- thanks for sharing your work! Maps maps maps! [10 May 2001] If you weren't mapped out already, we've got more for you. Tom has whipped up the final installment of township maps. The township map collection now includes 1860, 1865, 1870, 1875 and 1880-present. Great job Tom. See all 5 maps. Head there today -- http://www.rootsweb.com/~mnstearn/ --- Still looking for help: I would like to get confirmation regarding Enumeration District descriptions. Tom Steichen has confirmed the 1910 group already, so a little help on 1920 would be greatly appreciated. T1224-48 Descriptions of Census EDs: 1920 -- Michigan and Minnesota Census Enumeration District Descriptions (1920) Microfilm Publication T1224, Roll 48 Another alternative would be for you to look through the 1920 Census and confirm them that way too.
