Patrick Shaughnessy, was born in Ireland in 1828. Came to America in 1849 and first landed in New York and he remained in the state until 1857 then removed to Illinois. One year later he moved to Washington Lake, Sibley County and bought a farm of 160 acres. In 1878 he purchased 200 acres in Jessenland and moved here with his family. He was drafted in 1863 but sent a substitute. In 1854 his marriage with Rose Donlan took place. They have 10 children living. His eldest daughter married John L Gannon of Scott County. Above was written in 1882 in the History of the Minnesota Valley. Washington Lake: This town is located in the northeastern part of the county, and includes all of congressional township 114-26. The name was chosen from the lake of the same name in the central part of the town. The lake was so called from the fact that two of the first settlers on its borders were from Washington, DC. The first settlers in the town were John Shaughnessy and Michael Griffin. They came in the fall of 1854 and made their claims, returning in the spring for permanent settlement. They located in the southeastern part of the town. Mr Shaughnessy's brother Martin located in Section 25, where he now lives. Above was copied from the same history for the History of St Brendan's Parish, The Village of Green Isle, and Minnesota's First Irish Settlement. Note that the last section that mentions Washington DC reads like John S and Michael G. were the settlers from Wash. This is an incorrect assumption. Both the Shaughnessy and Griffin families came from Ireland to Susquehanna County in NE PA where they lived near my Grimes and Doheny ancestors. My ancestors (Michael Grimes Sr and Thomas Doheny) came to Susquehanna in 1835 and 1840 respectively, and came to Jessenland in 1852 and were the first Irish settlers in Sibley County. It is possible that Patrick, John, and martin were brothers or otherwise related, but I think they were two different families. What is your Shaughnessy connection? I have other info including marriages if you are interested. Bill Grimes Round Rock, TX
