It was so great to see somebody from Rock County answer a query. We were there last summer, but we were given the wrong office hours and wasted a whole Sunday trying to do some research ourselves. In the hope you still might be able to help, here is more detailed information: Johan Johannssen (abt 1845-abt 1900 in Hardwick); wife Lena (abt 1850-Aug 15, 1909, in Hardwick); children -- Elevine (March 5, 1869-Jan. 29, 1949), Inga (abt 1871), Mary (abt 1873), Othillia (abt 1875), Carl (abt 1877) and Ed (abt 1879 in Norway, abt 1970 in Heron Lake). I believe everyone went by Johnson as soon as they arrived in the U.S. My wife's grandparents were Magnus Hvam and Elevine; her mother was Esther Hvam. We are retired in Texas now, so we really appreciate your efforts. Thank you.

I'm sorry there is no listing for Johan Johannessen or John Johnson in Rock county. I also checked for Hvam. Again, none listed. In Pipestone County, I was able to locate a bio for Jacob G. Johannsen (wife, Maggie Tanek; children, Arthur, John, Albert, Louis, and an infant). Also listed is August Johannsen (wife, Maud C. Jessen). Let me know if you would like the bios of these. Spelling didn't seem to be of much importance in those days, so maybe there's a connection.

Elevine was born March 5, 1869, near Moss, Norway. She married Magnus Hvam, also of Luverne, and they had four children--Norman (1894-1955), Lillian (1896-1990), Esther (1898-1936) and Elmer (1907-1955). I am interested in learning if there is any mention of them in your Rock County History book.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/RJB.2ACI/254.3.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Dear Maureen: This book is a History of Rock and Pipestone Counties. It covers the founding of the counties, some churches, businesses, and some biographies. Those who had biographies published in the book, paid to have them published and were ususally well-to-do doctors, lawyers, and business owners. I do not know what the criteria was (besides money) that allowed one to be published. This book is not a book that lists everyone who's ever lived in Rock or Pipestone county, so naturally hundreds of thousands of people are not listed. It does give great family information (parents/birthplace/siblings/occupations/children/etc.) of those who are listed which is why I've offered to do lookups. I'm sorry the person you were looking for was not published in the book.

Try those names on Google's search engine. You might also find some maps at the Library of Congress website (LOC). They probably took the the train to Sioux Falls and then got on the Great Northern to Viborg. You might also try a Google search for "Railfan". Good Luck, Rod
