For those of you who aren't familiar with city directories: They are published every year (even now), and typically include address and occupation. They are more like a phone book than a census. Women are typically NOT listed, unless they have their own business, or in some years, students. They are great for figuring out the nearest church, or when people moved, as some even give where they went. There are always ads for businesses, lists of fraternal organizations, churches, etc. Some are on-line, some are not. I love them, just don't have the time to take on clients or do lookups in them!
