My grandmother used to say her relatives were from Alsace-Lorraine, but the best I could ever do is to learn that her father's father was from Hesse-Nassau and her mother's family from Hannover. I think many German descendants named Alsace-Lorraine during the WWI & WWII periods so as not to sound so German.
