    3. According to the contact in Germany, the Lauf family was protestant. I would so appreciate it if you could ask your friend if he has any records for 1872-1876, the known years that Charles was the Police Captain. I highly suspect that the surname was anglicized in some way, since I cannot find any record of him at all in the US.
