    2. Re the VA: I checked into getting a copy of the autopsy done on my grandfather at the VA. My mother (his child) had to sign for it. Then it turned out that the records were also in the fire. If no records are available on the individual, I would look for records/histories of the battle, which should specify which Army group was where & when--and with his Army Unit & the date of death, you might get so idea of what happened. Also: Mom's 1st cousin died in WWII. His commanding officer wrote the family to explain what happened & offer condolences. I have read a copy made by my g-aunt. i.e. copies might be floating around or summarized in old letters. Good luck!
