    3. Dear List members, Could I please ask for your advice regarding how to find out if there are still some remaining relatives in St. Paul or surroundings descended from my grandfather's uncle Victor Hanson, immigrated from Sweden in the late 1880's. Victor Hanson was born in Arby, Småland in 1856, and brought along at least one son, Peter Arthur Hanson, born in 1881. According to the 1890 Census they lived at Boards 877 Woodbridge, St. Paul, MN, USA. Victor died in St. Paul 1913. Peter Arthur married Ella Anna Kutzky (b. 1882). They, in turn, had (at least) six children, all with the surname Hanson: - Harvey Arthur, b. 1905, d. 1989 - George Victor, b. 1908, d. 1996 - Arthur H., b. 1910, d. 1998 - Mantor John, b. 1914, d. 1984 - Earle Robert, b. 1916, d. 1962 - Dorothy Amelia, b. 1918, d. 2002 According to Minnesota Birth index, two children were born to a Arthur H. Hanson: Bruce Arthur Hanson, born in Ramsey County in 1938 and Douglas Charles Hanson, 1945. In addition to my interest in family research, I would very much like to get in contact with these relatives. My mother is turning 80 next year and has very clear memories of her second cousin visting Sweden in the 1930's. We also have a photo from that occasion that we would like to share with them. Any advice about how to continue to trace them would be very much appreciated. Best regards, Katarina Mühlenbock Gothenburg, Sweden

    3. Dear List, The Minnesota Historical Society does not have the 1860s-1890s (St. Paul) Ramsey County Death Records in their possession. They are held by the City/County Vital Record Division. The LDS Church has copied some of the early Ramsey County death records, so that is another place to search.

    1. Re: Adoption Question
    2. Mary Bakeman
    3. I'm sending this to the Ramsey MnGenWeb list, to see if anyone has a connection to the Adelmann family Silvia is asking about. I don't know that Silvia is on our mailing list, so please direct your responses to her. Mary List mom ++++++++++++ Dear Silvia, Legal adoption in Minnesota is covered by a 100-year-old privacy law, with records sealed by the court. One needs to go through the court in question to have them opened, which many courts will do when there is a reason (health concerns, for example) for doing so. However, not everyone went to court, and many children were raised using the surname of a step-father without any legal proceedings at all. A couple of things you might be able to do to determine without having to ask the court: The Iron Range Research Center in Hibbing offers a free search of naturalization records for the state -- and will also provide copies for a fee. These are only for MN courts, and do not include records for other states, or for the Federal Courts located in MN. <http://www.ironrangeresearchcenter.org> If the birth father arrived in the U.S. before 1930, he should appear on that census. The census is available on-line through a couple of subscription services, notably Ancestry.com. I believe that gives information on when a person came to the U.S. That would give you an idea if the dates match up. He may not have come directly to MN. You can usually get helpful information from a death certificate. Sometimes they even have both parents and the name of the village or area where the person was born. There is usually a full date of death, and a date of birth. That too would provide a clue to identifying him as a person from the same area as the rest of your family. An index to the MN ones are on-line through the MN Historical Society site. They can provide a copy for a fee. < http://people.mnhs.org/dci/search.cfm?bhcp=1> I don't do research for people -- but we do have a swap page on our website <http://www.parkbooks.com/MnGenWeb/swap.html> Perhaps there is someone who would be able to do some work for you in exchange for some German research. Good luck on your search! Mary At 07:47 AM 8/24/2006, you wrote: >Hello, > >I hope you are able to help me. 3. Hi Jim, Thank you so much for the reply. From my notes, (taken from obits, marriage registration, cemetery stone, distant relative recollections, and census info), I have the following: 1860 born Ontario Canada (father was station master on railroad, all 3 sons became involved in the railroad) 1886 Immigrated to US, unknown where Sep 1888 married St. Thomas, Ontario (confirmed) (residence after marriage to be: St. Cloud, Minnesota) (wife's family also with railroad in St. Thomas, Ontario) James residence at marriage was St. Cloud, Minnesota Louise's residence at marriage was St. Thomas, Ontario 1888 Louise immigrated to US 1890 daughter Margaret Russell born Minnesota 1890 1892 daughter Hughina Rose Russell born & died, unknown where, but buried in Ontario, confirmed. Nov 1904 Superintendent of the Missouri Pacific Railway (with headquarters at Atchison, Kansas) (not known if this means he lived in Missouri or Kansas)(per father's obit) Dec 1908 Brookfield, Missouri (per mother's obit) 1910 Census Portland, Mulnomah, Oregon (wife wife Louise, and confirmed daughter Margaret, all info matches) "Superintendent of Railroad" 1930 census St. Paul, Ramsey County, MN (with wife Louise A.) Sept 1931 General Superintendent of the Union Depot in St. Paul, MN (per sister's obit) 30 Nov 1948 died Santa Clara, Caper SSDI (mother's maiden name "Rose") (wife Louise also died Santa Clara, CA 07 Aug 1954, possibly as daughter Margaret Bentley lived there, yet to confirm) per SSDI (mother's maiden name Milligan, father's Secord) (I don't know where he was in 1900 or 1920 yet, although there is a promising 1900 census for Moraine, Grand Forks County, N. Dakota, although the immigration date is off, but I know his brother Hugh was killed by falling off train onto tracks in Dakota, assuming North Dakota. I don't know if James and Louise were divorced. I know they had 2 children, one, Hughina, that died at 7 months old, and the other Margaret b. 1890 Minnesota, that married a ? Bentley and lived in California. Re: the James---I realize I forgot to type in "w" to say "James was a superintendant of the Missouri Pacific Railway, not he lived in James (sometimes I type too fast, I apologize). This I'm afraid is all I have, which was more than last week, after a 4 hour session on a microfilm reader and some generously shared census images. I guess being with the railroad he travelled a bit. Any help or direction is much appreciated. Nancy Caldwell I live close to where he was born in Duntroon, Ontario Stayner, Ontario

    3. An answer to the question requires one of my least favorite lines, but oh so true: It all depends...... --on the specific time period and the residence of the person who is being traced. For the most part, education in Minnesota before the 1950s included elementary schools operated under a County Superintendent of Schools and serving grades 1-8, with high schools (9-12) in larger communities. For example, I now live in Roseville -- just north of Larpenteur which divided St Paul from Rose Township. There were several elementary schools (K-8) in Rose Township, but those students who went on to high school went into St. Paul for the most part. Some also went to Minneapolis -- whatever school was the most convenient for them to attend. In the 1950s, consolidation took effect, and each new district had at least one high school. So one needs to know exactly where the person lived and what school was closest to begin the search. --whether or not the records were turned over to the State Archives. Not all were. For example, State Archives holdings for the school on my corner (which was Ramsey District Number 10 - Lexington School) includes school census records, a couple of attendance books, and some scrapbooks from the PTA. The school census records cover a period of years and list upcoming students as well as current students, father or guardian, age, etc. They don't report which high school the student chose on graduation from this elementary school. But once you know the number, check the MHS catalog for the records for that school. Then MHS also holds yearbooks for many of the St. Paul high schools, and I'm sure that they can be used at other places too -- I'd bet the main St. Paul Public Library has some, for example, though I haven't looked at their catalog. Long answer to a short question -- land ownership maps will show the elementary and high school locations and the number. MHS also has records on the consolidation. It's detective work! Mary List Mom P.S. I'm quite familiar with Dist. 10 -- it became part of the Roseville District, and was one of the first to close in the early 1970s as that district consolidated its elementary schools. The site is on Lexington and County Rd B, and is now a park, ringing again with the sounds of children playing, ball games, etc. At 06:03 PM 8/14/2006, L J Swendner Jr wrote: >List Members: > Logic, in my opinion, would suggest that a Record of > students attending a elementary school exists in some musty Archive > so as to show a line of education thru the education system (for > many, High School). > My limited skills have been unable to locate this Archive > => I have contacted the MSHS several times using different inquiry > modes and thru differing individuals. 1. Re: [mnramsey] trying to find where an old city address would be
    2. Jim Sazevich
    3. The house at 891 Conway St., between Mendota and Forest streets is in the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood of St. Paul, about 2 miles east, southeast of the downtown central business district. It is an old inner-city neighborhood, settled and built mostly in the 1870s and 1880s, mainly by German and Irish immigrants. Like many St. Paul neighborhoods, Dayton's Bluff had it's own Police Substation, built in the mid-1880s in the 700 block of Margaret St., just off of East Seventh St., the neighborhood's main arterial street. William P. Clynch was a policeman working out of the Margaret Street Police Substation, according to the contemporary St. Paul City Directories. In 1910, the Clynch family was living at 702 Hudson St., in the same neighborhood. Both the house at 891 Conway, and the old Margaret Street Police Substation are still standing. The substation was converted for use as apartments around 1940. The Minnesota Historical Society has some nice photographs of the old Margaret St. Station, and many of the other neighborhood stations. They likely have a photograph of Officer Clynch in their collection as well. You can access the station photographs at their website: www.mnhs.org You will be happy to know that the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood survives much intact as it was in 1914, and the Clynch family if visiting today, would not have a hard time finding their old homestead. A large portion of the neighborhood is an Historic Preservation District, because of its wealth of historic architecture. The neighborhood was named for Lyman Dayton, a Minnesota Territorial pioneer from Rhode Island. He bought large parcels of land on the St. Anthony Hill (northwest of downtown) and also on the bluff which bears his name. He lived from 1850, with his wife and son, on the brow of Dayton's Bluff in a beautiful home (torn down in 1974) that overlooked the entire city. He was buried near his home when he died in 1865. Maria and Bates streets in the neighborhood are named for his wife Maria Bates Dayton. Dayton Avenue, on the St. Anthony hill is named for Lyman Dayton, and begins its westerly route, just north of our St. Paul Cathedral. Hope this helps. If you have any specific questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
