Hi, When I read this wonderful comment about sharing photos with past residents I felt I needed to address the List. I work and volunteer with the Ramsey County Historical Society and we get requests all the time from people researching their home (s). The thing they want the most are photos!! We have the Historic Site Survey collection and a photo collection. There are exterior photos with the Site Surveys and few exterior shots in the photo collection. One of the biggest "bummers" in my job is when I have to tell someone that I can't find something for them, that we only have pictures if someone decided to donate them long ago and if you don't donate them than people in the future won't be able to enjoy them either. :( and that people just never think to donate pictures of their homes, exterior OR interior. Especially interior! Interior shots are rare. So my request is that at some point you please think to donate any extra pictures of your St. Paul OR Ramsey County homes - they could even be your family sitting in the yard at Easter with the house in the background. Or a family shot at Christmas with the fireplace in the background. Or even your whole block. pictures of neighborhoods or buildings. Thanks Mary for supplying us with this way to communicate with everyone and throw our questions and comments out here to share. Best Wishes, Jana Armstead _www.rchs.com_ (http://www.rchs.com) 651-222-0701 In a message dated 11/21/2006 3:09:34 PM Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: I was born in West St paul but after my dad died in 1934 we moved to w 7th area--lived at 437 Banfil Street--if I remember correctly the corner of Goodhue! went to st stan and then Monroe--graduated in 1944. Michelle, This is a shot in the dark and will require quite a lot of work, but why don't you try the following procedure: 1. Get the names of all the high schools in Ramsey and Hennepin Counties. 2. Then get the addresses or phone numbers of the local library of the towns where those high schools were/are. 3. Write to each of those libraries, requesting yearbook lookups. Ask specifically for printouts of the pages showing pictures of graduating seniors between 1965? and 1971. Offer to pay for time and cost. 4. After you receive the printouts of the pictures of the graduating classes, look through the pictures to see if anyone looks like you or someone you know. 5. If you end up with a familiar face, you will also have a name. That's your first step. You will have to take it from there. Believe it or not, I found my mother's parents in a similar manner. All I knew was that she came from Winona County, Minnesota. I was looking for someone who looked like my mother but found someone who looked like ME! We eventually had a wonderful reunion with her 4 half sisters. Don't give up hope. 6. If you do find the name of someone you suspect could be related to you, you might check the high school reunion pages for lists of addresses of former graduates. Of course, there are other options besides alumni lists at this point in your research. My grandmother used to say her relatives were from Alsace-Lorraine, but the best I could ever do is to learn that her father's father was from Hesse-Nassau and her mother's family from Hannover. I think many German descendants named Alsace-Lorraine during the WWI & WWII periods so as not to sound so German. Alsace-Lorraine moved back and forth between, I believe, France and Germany. See wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alsace_Lorraine "Alsace-Lorraine (French: Alsace-Lorraine; German: Elsa-Lothringen) was a territory that used to be disputed between France and Germany, but is currently a part of France and has been since World War II." There is a famous short story describing the last day in a school where, the next day, they would be part of another country and taught in a different language. I have some relatives who were from Alsace-Lorraine. I understand it has belonged to France, Belgium, and/or Germany. All I know for certain is that it has been part of a number of different countries. Does anyone know for sure? Joanne
I'd like to ask a very stupid question. Would you please define Bohemian for me? I'm 1/2 Irish. I'm still trying to figure out the rest. Joanne
Bohemians are people from the country of Bohemia which is now Czechoslovakia. Bohemia used to be part of Austria. My one set of grandparents said they came from Austria--but they lived in Bohemia. Prague used to be the capital of Bohemia. I'm trying to discover if there was a family relationship between my gr-gr-grandfather, Robert Dugan and Charles Purney Dugan. I believe they may have been cousins. Charles was the son of Henry Dugan, born 2/1/1821 in Newry, Armagh, Ireland, and Christina Miller Purney. Robert was the son of Joseph Dugan, born in1820 in Newtown Hamilton, Armagh, Ireland and Sarah Kerr. They all resided in St. Paul by 1865. I have a photo album with photos of all except Christina. Charles is the only person about whom II have no details. Linda
