    2. Thanks Annie. You are right. It is the Ramsey Hill and the small stone building at the bottom in what would be the Southwest corner used to be a synagogue or mortuary. I know my grandmother was buried from there in 1942. I'll check out the one on Cleveland Hill. Don't remember it right now so a ride when I get back will do me good. 2. No, not Cleveland. I think it is Ft. Smith Road off of West 7th and the hill comes out on Summit at the Minnesota Club just West of Western. Norm ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

Cleveland runs north and south and intersects with Summit Avenue several miles west of the Ramsey Hill. Cleveland runs from Mississippi River Blvd. (I think) thru the Highland Village, past St. Catherine's College (on Randolph, Ave.), past St. Thomas College (on Summit Avenue), and continues north. Could you be thinking of Grand Avenue? The Ramsey Hill comes down and intersects with Grand Avenue at the bottom of the hill. But this area is not far off of West 7th Street near downtown St. Paul. Here's what I got from a Google check: Temple of Aaron Synagogue. View Map. 616 S Mississippi River Blvd, St. Paul That address is correct. The addresses for the temples were already established, I think, but the message about the hill mentioned another Jewish building, and the only one I could think of was the one on the downhill to St. Paul Avenue and the firestation, which is not on the Ramsey Hill. If there is one there, I am not aware of it, and since my husband's death have no one to ask to verify that info. If the snow we are supposed to get doesn't arrive (here's hoping as it is 12 hours late now), and the driving is not bad, I could take a look tomorrow to see what I can see. As for the pics I have not volunteered for them as I do not have a digital camera, but I have a phone camera and I can try and see what I can get with it. Sometimes I can get really good pics with it and other times not so good. Depends on the weather, lighting and subject. The street I was thinking of has to be Edgecomb, it curves around and meets up with St. Paul Avenue by the Fire station. The building that I was thinking of that is a Jewish building is in that curve, about near Edgecomb and Howell or just south of there, I think. And there is a Jewish community center on St. Paul Avenue. Annie in Minnesota ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    2. Mary Bakeman
    3. Some of you may have already found this website, but for those of you who haven't, you might want to check it out. It's at <http://maps.metro-inet.us/> then follow the 'bread crumbs.' This site uses selected aerial maps to allow you to compare how land within Ramsey County was developed from 1940 to the current day. For example, I live in Roseville, and you can see the development of Rosedale as it rises and expands, the building of the high schools and the demise of some K-8 facilities, the blossoming of residential areas from what were market gardens and farms, etc. On the St. Paul side, I was able to locate a building that was had an electrical fire in the 1950s and was replaced by a bigger building. And of course the interstate highways were put in after 1940. Lots of food for thought in how our families lived! I love maps, and getting them to show this kind of detail is especially fun. Try it! 2. Julian, I will be returning to St. Paul the end of May and would love to help you. Right now I am in AZ. My father was a member of Mt. Zion and my grandfather worked at the Temple of Aaron, the old one, prior to 1922. There is also a small building at the bottom of a large hill that goes up to Summit Ave. (Can't think of the name of the hill right now) but this was a synagogue and my grandmother was buried from there. If you don't have a response to your request let me know and I will do my best to assist you when I return to MN. Shalom, Norman D. 2. Julian H. Preisler
    3. Dear List Members: My name is Julian H. Preisler and I reside in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia near Washington, DC. I am searching for a person who can take a color photograph of the exterior of Temple Mount Zion located at 1300 Summit Avenue and Temple of Aaron located at 616 Mississippi River Blvd., both in St. Paul. I am researching American Synagogue Architecture and am in the process of creating an e-Book on the subject. Photo credit will be given to the photographer both in the research project and upon publication. If anyone can do this for me or knows of someone who is willing to assist, please do get in touch with me. Photographs can be digital (preferred), but I can also accept regular print photographs and can scan them into the database. I have photographs of only a few of the Jewish temples and synagogues in Minnesota and would also like to include the two in St. Paul. I thank you in advance for your help and look forward to hearing from any of you. Sincerely, Mr. Julian H. 2. Hi Nancy, ST MATTHEW'S LUTHERAN CHURCH was one lot off of University and Dale St's., facing Dale St. The other church, a half mile away is FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH on Charles and MacKubin St's. ST MATTHEW"S was a German Lutheran church that had German services on certain days. Both churches are still serving congregates, although St. Matthew's has moved to Lexington and Minnehaha Ave's. Another thought is the Minnesota History Center. A neighborhood newspaper I don't know if there is or was one. That area is referred to as FROGTOWN. Regards, Judy

    3. Do you know what faith your family was? Many of my German/Prussion Lutheran family attended a rather large congregation called Trinity. (They later split into three churches due to size.) A little of their history can be found connected to Elmhurst Cemetery in Saint Paul. http://www.elmhurstcemetery.org/about.php Many of their original records can be found at the Minnesota Historical Society building in Saint Paul. I also took the liberty of looking up Stuewe and some soundex variations at the www.MNHS.org website. I searched for Stuewe and its soundex variations for maiden names since you had to trace females. You may have done this already but if not, it may help. Good hunting!!! MONCRIEF, LAURA A.
