I'm assuming that it is Ancestry.com's birth index you are looking at -- that came from the Minnesota State Health Department, and so you would need to look at the original certificate that was the source of the index. I believe their copies of the original certs are held in the State Archives at the Minnesota History Center. Since she is not in your direct line, you may not be able to see the actual certificate (100-year privacy law and all that). You will have to fill in an access application to request permission to view it. But depending on how old she was at the time, consider that she might have requested the changes herself -- e.g., replacing 'baby girl' with her name, for example, for Social Security purposes, if she was going to become employed. 3. According to the contact in Germany, the Lauf family was protestant. I would so appreciate it if you could ask your friend if he has any records for 1872-1876, the known years that Charles was the Police Captain. I highly suspect that the surname was anglicized in some way, since I cannot find any record of him at all in the US. 1. [MNRAMSEY] LAUF surname

    3. I forgot to mention in my previous post about Charles LAUF that I have a subscription to Ancestry.com and I can't find any reference to this family at all. I've been doing genealogy for over 10 years, but I am really stumped by this one! (And in FL so can't do any local research) Thanks much, Karen

    3. I am trying to help someone in Germany research their family in the states. We know that Charles (also Carl/Karl) Lauf was born in Germany in 1836 and immigrated about 1858. He served in the Civil War (PA) and ended up in St. Paul. He sent two letters from St. Paul to Germany, one in 1873 and the other in 1876, that my friend has in his possession. They mention the following things that I hope a St. Paul researcher can help me with: Charles' wife's name was Lizzie, and she died prob. between Jan 1872 and Jan 1873. Charles purchased a large white Italian marble tombstone for her gravesite. >From the fall of Sept 1872 he was in the St. Paul area and was the Captain of Police. There is a book on the St Paul police and firefighters -- it gives biographies, etc. I think the MN Historical Society has a copy. And of course there is both a 1875 State census and a 1880 Federal census to check for the wife's name and the children. >If anyone could please lookup LAUF in any of your St. Paul books, I >would really appreciate it. 3. I have a portrait of the Tonawanda Club 1916 taken by N. A. Forseen, 6th and St. Peter Sts. I have tried to find information on this 'club' online but have found no reference to it. It is on my list to research on my next trip to MNHS, but I thought somebody on this list may be familiar with the group. My grandfather, Joseph B. Gerlach, is pictured, along with about 59 other young men in individual oval head-shot photos each identified by name. My grandfather was about 18 at that time. The picture lists officers as follows: President G.W. Winkel (Winnel?), Vice President C.B. Michel, Secretary A.W. Kasmirski, and Treasurer G.F. Gerlach. Does anyone know the purpose of this group? Social club of some sort? I can list the names of the other young men or send a scan if anyone is interested. 3. Hello, there! Just wondering if you have any info on the Luke Harrison Bacon family, originally from Nova Scotia. Diane Stiles Bacon I only do lookups in one source -- it's always best to include something about dates, where in Ramsey County they lived, etc. This is too broad to provide much help. 1. [MNRAMSEY] IWANOSKI FUNERAL HOME - ST. PAUL, MN.
    2. Jim Sazevich
    3. In response to your recent query re: Iwanoski's Funeral Home at 579 Wabasha, St. Paul. The Iwanoski (aka Ivanoski) family moved to St. Paul, just after the turn of the 20th century and settled in the Frogtown neighborhood, on Edmund street. By 1912, Felix Iwanoski (son of John and Bertha Iwanoski) was working as an embalmer's apprentice with Frank Godbout, a well known funeral director, who's business was located on Wabasha Street, near the State Capitol Building. In about 1916, Felix Iwanoski started his own undertaking business, opening his first funeral parlor at 93 W. Seventh street., in downtown St. Paul. The business was later moved to Wabasha street, where the family operated their funeral home at various addresses, with various partners, for more than 30 years. In 1949, Vernon Iwanoski (nephew of Felix) moved his business to 1235 Arcade Street, on St. Paul's Eastside, and renamed the company, Phalen Park Funeral Home. In 2005, the Phalen Park Funeral Home merged with another company, and is now known as Maple Oaks/Phalen Park Funeral Home, located at 2585 Stillwater Road, Maplewood, MN 55119. The Iwanoski Funeral Home records are preserved (though all are not complete) at the Maple Oaks/Phalen Park Funeral Home. Please write them with your specific request. Hope this helps.
