Can anyone help Ruth? She may not be subscribed to our list, so please include her e-mail address in your response. >From: "Ruth Myers" <[email protected]> >Subject: RAMSEY COUNTY QUERY > >June 30, 2007 Ruth >Myers <mailto:[email protected]>[email protected] > >Looking for PICTURE of old JAMES J. HILL SCHOOL in St. Paul. My >husband went to school there 1941-43. For all of you looking for school photos. The quickest place besides this list to check for photos of schools is the Minnesota Historical Society Visual Resources Database, free and available through the MHS website at <www.mnhs.org/>. However, there are photos of schools buried in some of the State Archives Collections as well, which may take some digging to find. (I did just that, when I was researching Ramsey County District #10 that used to be on my corner. Been there, done that, not going to do it again!) If you decide to dig, remember that Ramsey County and all of Minnesota underwent consolidation of school districts in the mid-1950s. Before consolidation, there were St. Paul Schools, including high schools, and there was the Ramsey County Supt of Schools, with jurisdiction over the Ramsey County (rural) schools. The K-8 school I researched became part of the brand new Roseville Area School District (#623) at that point, along with various others K-8 districts. What had been Dist. #10 became Lexington Elementary School, in District #623. The Roseville district had NOT existed prior to that time, and a new high school was built. The office of 'County Supt. of Schools' went away, too, as a creator of records, as the rural districts were all subsumed by new districts. Today, all independent school districts in Ramsey County begin with "62" -- it's the county number. So when browsing the MHS main library catalog for State Archives possibilities, remember that records include the creator as part of the catalog entry and be cautious about using district numbers. The time period is VERY important! Mary List mom Mary Bakeman [email protected] Ramsey MnGenWeb Coordintor http://www.parkbooks.com/MnGenWeb/ Park Genealogical Books http://www.parkbooks.com/
I've "rescued" an old photograph identified as Mr. James PAGE which was taken at the Haynes Studio in St. Paul, Minnesota. The photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900's with Mr. PAGE appearing to be in his 50's or 60's at the time it was taken. Thanks to the assistance of a PAGE Family Researcher I believe that this is a photograph of James PAGE b. 17 May 1861 in Livingston Co. MI and d. 17 Nov 1923 in St. Paul MN. James was married to Fanny MEAD. The photograph was recovered along with other belonging to the NYE, KENT, COMFORT, and MCKUNE Families, though I've no idea if there is a connection though I mention it just in case it is a clue. I am hoping to locate someone from James' family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
Bud, Auburn is also lovely, rolling hills horse country. My grandfather's grandfather lived in St. Paul for many years after moving from his native England and before 1873 when he took the family to Los Angeles. He served the Union Army as a band leader on the march to Gettysburg during the Civil War from 1861 to 1862 at the age of 45. Jim Sazevich, historian, has been ever so helpful supplying me with early images of St. Paul neighborhoods where my family operated second hand stores and grocery shops. They came to the U.S. sometime in the 1850s. I have the wife, Margaret Moore and children on a ship called the William Tapscott, 11-13-1856 from Liverpool to Castle Garden. I also have Alfred Moore & his brother, Charles, naturalization declarations. I was born 1952 and enjoy membership in the First Century Families of Los Angeles thanks to Alfred Moore the first, also known as the "Minnesota Auctioneer" and the "Unofficial Mayor of Los Angeles." He was active in the development of Los Angeles County real estate and a frequent contributor to the LA Times. Some day I hope to visit St. Paul where his shop was located on Third Street between St. Peter and Wabasha. He also had addresses at 267 and 269 Third (between Market or State and Pearl, I believe, according to old directories) next to the Presbyterian Church. Another address was 205 Bridge Square. His address at one time was No 28 Summit Avenue, St. Paul. His brother-in-law, John Merryweather, was in busines as a builder on Wabashaw Street. Together they sponsored and publicized St. George's Day "OLD ENGLISH" Tea Drinking and Social Dance in Market Hall, Wednesday Even'g April 23 1873. "$1 to the entire programme. Tea and Table at 8 o'clock Procure tickets of the following committee or any member of St George's Society: H. A. Moore, Wabashaw Street, William DOBSON, Wild Hunter, Jackson Street, John MERRYWEATHER, Builder, Wabashaw St., F. KELLY, Fourth St. It is intended that this entertainment shall eclipse all former ones. A full managing Comittee of the English Ladies have the entire control of the tables. We wish it a good success. All our friends are cordially invited. Hi List: I'm looking for some help. My Greatgrandfather Gustave Hans NILSSON married Emma Maria SVENSSON in Sept. 1885 in the Swedish Lutheran church in St Paul by Rev. SVAARD. I would like to find their marriage record if possible. I hope there is someone out there that can help me. Bill Forshay - San Antonio, TX --------------------------------- Bored stiff? Loosen up... There is an Anna Skoog born around 1851 that died January 25, 1905, certificate #1905-44-2190 microfilm at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul. That would probably tell what cemetery she is buried in. I wish I had time to go and look at the certificate for you but I can't. Maybe you can call them and someone would look it up for you. Their phone number is 651-296-6126. Good luck. Ruth A. Can anyone help Erik? He doesn't give us a lot of time to check death certificates at the Minnesota Historical Society, with his trip beginning on Monday! Because they are likely Lutheran, the cemeteries with Catholic and Jewish burials can be eliminated. Union Cemetery does have a lot of Swedes, but that sure doesn't eliminate Oakland or Roselawn, or other possibilities. I'm sure Erik would appreciate any assistance anyone can provide. As genealogists, who get so much use out of censuses, I figure we must fill out any legit census form. --now watch me get hit with a form the size of a phone book! P.S. If you don't fill it out, a live person will be sent to your door to get the info--that's the job I could have had if I wanted it. A few years ago I attended a hiring session for census workers. In addition to the US Cnesus conducted every 10 years, there are a number of specialized censuses conducted. One to measure real unemployment (including those not getting payments), for example. If in doubt, you can contact the US census people to verify if a mailing is legit. Hi Annie, I'm in North St. Paul, and I haven't received any kind of census form. I'd make a phone call before filling anything out. If there's not a phone number listed call the attorney general.
