Dear Mary, was your mother ever adopted or lived with another family whose name she may have used? Keep hunting. There is always a way but it is not always easy. You all were so efficient with the last one of these, here's one that's a little more challenging! It would have been hard to keep the marriage 'secret,' at least in Ramsey County, as marriage records have always been public records, if someone was looking. Now getting married in an adjoining county would have obscured the picture a little. Also interesting to speculate on WHY she would want to keep the marriage secret -- perhaps, Megan, you could fill us in a little on this. Any other ideas for Megan? The index is theirs as well. The state got a lot more interested the late 1890s, which is why Minnesota has the ONLY 1900 mortality census in the U.S. The index cards came from reports to the state, the death records after 1908 from actual copies of the certs filed at the local levels of government. However, the first Minnesota law requiring the filing of vital records in Minnesota was in 1870 (they were to be filed in local governmental offices -- villages such as White Bear Lake, townships such as Rose and New Canada), and some in St. Paul go back before 1870. The microfilms made by the Genealogical Society of Utah for the Family History Libraries were made from the records at the County level, and will include the earlier records. Does anyone have access to marriage license records, probably in the 1940s or late 1930s? If so, could you look up a marriage license for Boyd Walrath and Zelma Leola McFarlin (or Hartwell)? Also, does the St. Regis Hotel in St. Paul still exist? That is where my grandmother died in 1945 and I just wondered if it was still there. _________________________________________________________________ Climb to the top of the charts!
