He was born in Norway in 1882 to Ole Olson Langhei and Joraand Sordahl. He and his family came to the U.S. around 1883 and lived in Bygland, Minnesota. His siblings, most of whom were born in Bygland, were Sarah, Bergid, Julie, Knuto (who also changed his last name to Olson), Thorald, Signe, and Gyro (Gertie). He married Tillie Anderson (also from Norway) around 1901. They eventually moved to Minneapolis. They had eight children: Ann, Julia (June), Oscar, Thelma, Olga, Alice, Gilbert and Bernice.
