There is a John Stubson in the IGI, Family Search, b. 1876, m. Thea Bangen, 9 Jan 1909 in MN. Her parents were Hans Hensen Bangen and Eline Thomasdatter. There is an Ancestral Table for them. My ancestor is Emma Stubson, b. 6 Feb 1881 in Climax, MN. Her parents were Esten Stubson and Beret Johnson. He was from Lonset?, Norway and she was from Osterdolen, Hedmark, Norway. Emma and John may have been brother and sister. I have been searching for the grandparents but suspect that Esten might have changed his name. I suspect his name may have been Estensen. Do you know anything more?

Hi Karen, Many of the French Canadians who immigrated from Quebec to Minnesota, then went on to Yakima. My father's family, both maternal and paternal (Boisselle and Laurent) did this. Here are some of the reasons I've heard from my father and some distant relatives. They considered Yakima as "Like Paradise". The weather is much less extreme then Minnesota or Quebec. The ancestors were able to work continuously throughout the year. Yakima does have it's different seasons, but the winters are much more tolerable. Another reason, which is how the Boisselle families came, was because of the timber industry. My grandfather's brother was sent to Yakima by a logging company to work a certain piece of machinery in the mill. My grandfather, his three sisters, their families and my great-grandparents all followed him to Yakima and lived there until their deaths. I have heard there were serious epidemics in Minnesota in those years, so I would imagine rather than stay and risk death, they moved on. Lastly, I have also heard they came because of the war. There were jobs here (Boeing-Seattle). In Yakima there were millwork jobs, carpenter work and farming. I hope this helps a little in explaining the "mass immigration" of our ancestors. Let me know if we have any family connections (Surnames: Boisselle, Laurent, Shields, Hecker) Good luck in your research, Mary Boisselle (born in Yakima, WA) Seattle, WA mlbois@gte.net -----Original Message----- From: khuber53 [SMTP:khuber53@gateway.net] Sent: Saturday, July 08, 2000 5:48 PM To: MNPOLK-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MNPOLK-L] From Polk Co, to Yakima, WA It seems quite a few families moved from Polk Co, MN to Yakima,WA in the early 1900's. Posted on: Polk County Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mn/Polk?read=315 Surname: Ofstedal, Markuson, Jerde ------------------------- Anders Ofstedal and his sons Andreas and Simon were among early Polk County settlers. Anders and Agathe Lavik Ofstedal lived in Garden Township. Rev. Andreas was instrumental in six Lutheran churches beginning in the area. Andreas married (second) Mathilda Markuson, the daughter of Knute Markuson and Martha Reppen Markuson, who moved to Polk County as well. Andreas lived in Garfield Township. His first wife is buried in Little Norway Cemetery. Simon Ofstedahl lived in Garden Township and married Kari Tuff. Knute and Martha lived in Woodside Township, although she lived in Garfield Township after Knute died. One of their daughters Sina married Andrew Gjerde (later Jerde). If anyone is researching any of these families, I would love to exchange info, as I descend from Andreas and Simon's brother John -- who married a Markuson, sister of Mathilda and also a daughter of Knute and Martha. All were obviously Norwegian. Anders and Agate were from the farm of Ovstedal, outside of Evanger and Voss in Norway, although the Lavik farm is a little farther away in the Eksingdalen area. Martha Markuson was from the Reppen farm, just outside of Sogndal. Knute Markuson was from the Tenninger farm, with a brother in Tuftedal, just outside of Balestrand.
