Posted on: Polk County Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mn/Polk/10510 Surname: Christofferson ------------------------- In the phonebook for Grand Forks (ND)/East Grand Forks (MN) is listed a David Christofferson, 631 4th Street North, Grand Forks, ND, 58201, 701/772-7176. It is a long shot, but given how our Norwegian ancestors changed their last names, you might want to try contacting.
Posted on: Polk County Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mn/Polk/10509 Surname: Christofferson ------------------------- Could Chris Christofferson be my missing relative Christoffer Christofferson Domaas, born 1861 in Norway, emigrated to the USA in 1882 together with his brother (who lived in East Grand Forks ?)
Posted on: Polk County Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mn/Polk/10508 Surname: Domaas ------------------------- There were several newspapers in existance at that time. I'd suggest contacting the Campbell Public Library in East Grand Forks, the Grand Forks, ND, Public Library, or the Chester Fritz Library Special Collections at the U of ND in Grand Forks, ND. Also, the genweb site for ND has a listing of newspapers and when they published.
Posted on: Polk County Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mn/Polk/10507 Surname: Domaas ------------------------- Ole Domaas, my grandmother's uncle, drowned in Red River, four Miles north of East Grand Forks, on April 11th 1903. He had then probably lived on his own in the Red River Valley for many years. I wonder if his death would have been written about in any East Grand Forks newspaper. Would there be any information about his brother, Kristoffer, together with whom he emigrated from Norway in 1882 and about whom we know nothing about? Or his cousin who also went with them. Does anyone know about 1903 East Grand Forks newspapers (English or Norwegian)? Family in Norway want to find out more about them. Thanks ! Kjell.

Posted on: Polk County Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mn/Polk/10503 Surname: Brownlee, Hannah ------------------------- Hi, researching branches of my family tree that moved from Lanark Co. Canada to Polk Co. MN. in 1880s. They are Janet (Jennie) Brownlee b. June 21 1856 m. John Alexander Hannah, and brother James Brownlee b. May 21 1835 m. Muriel Ellen Anderson. I believe they both lived near Fisher Mn. as my Grandfather would stop at Fisher Mn. on his way to visit his brothers in Alberta Canada. Does anyone have any connections to or info on these families? Jim Brownlee
Posted on: Polk County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mn/Polk/534 Surname: Meland and Simpson ------------------------- I also have information re:Martin Meland and Anna Simpson. They had two children Theodore Emil and Joseph Martin. Both were born in Crookston, Polk County, MN. I also have other information. Martin was born in Dane County and Anna Simpson was from the Viroqua area down by LaCrosse. Martin left the famly, I believe shortly after Joseph was born (1891). His family, according to his mother's Will, was never heard from again, and Ted Meland never knew where is father was. It is nice to know that someone else is also interested in where Martin went!
Posted on: Polk County Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mn/Polk/533 Surname: Lovalien ------------------------- I must make a correction. Unfortunately, the township grid map I have is labelled incorrectly in that the townships are labelled "west." The townships should be labelled "north!" Which still leaves you in Queen. Sorry for the confusion.
Look at familysearch.org. Posted on: Polk County Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mn/Polk/532 Surname: Bliksrud ------------------------- I could easily be the confused one; I started looking in Polk due to the issuance of the homestead certificate in Crookston (hey, I'm originally from central MN and my geography gets weak north of Fergus Falls!) This was my first clue on the elusive "Carl". I greatly appreciate the help and hope I haven't sent you off on a wild chase. This may help me narrow where to search in census records. Thanks again- Mary
Posted on: Polk County Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mn/Polk/531 Surname: Blixrud ------------------------- According to my map, the southern most townships in Polk are 147. Township 141, Range 46 should be in Norman County (I'm confused). Are you aware of a town in the area of the homestead; that might be a clue.
Posted on: Polk County Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mn/Polk/530 Surname: Bliksrud, Blixrud, Neilson ------------------------- BLM is where I found the copy of the certificate- is that what you refer to as the homestead file? According to the document it is Homestead Certificate No. 4068, Application No. 7435. "east half of the southwest quarter and the lots numbered six and seven of section six in township one hundred and forty-one north of range forty-six west of the Fifth Principal Meridian in Minnesota, containing one hundred and fifty-three and sixty-nine hundredths of an acre". The number 384178 is written in the lower left of the document. Thanks for your assistance! Mary

Also, log on to www.blm.gov and you can order a copy of the homestead file from the BLM. This can be quite helpful.

Posted on: Polk County Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mn/Polk/527 Surname: Erickson ------------------------- There is one rural cemetery about 7 miles north of East Grand Forks, on MN Hiway 220: Bethany Lutheran, P.O. Box 360, East Grand Forks, MN 56721, 218/773-1501. Bethany is a merger of two churches, one of which was Bethesda Swedish. A Norwegian Lutheran church was literally across the road! They later mergered. If your grandfather was "Andrew" or "O. Metz" and your great-uncle was "S.E. Erickson," please advise as I have more information for you.
Hello Ann, Thanks for the response. I really appreciate it. I purchased that book last year. I believe I still have the address somewhere, if you are interested. It was around $25.00. There is a Township 148 West, Range 39 West, Fifth Prime Meridian in Polk County. This is Queen Township, which is in the SE corner of the county. All of the township and range designations for Polk include "West." Are you sure about "Polk County?"
