This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: SMITH, PRESTON, GIBSON, HOOVER, LOWRY, GRAY, LEWIS, JONES Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DIB.2ACE/317 Message Board Post: I descend from Lewis Smith & Serepta Preston who settled at Ottawa, Le Sueur County, MN, in 1857. They returned to Delaware County, IN, in 1862, at the time of the Sioux Uprising. They returned to Ottawa in November 1866, along with three other wagons: George Washington Smith, Jonas Hoover & his wife, Sarah; & Samuel & Nancy Gibson. Some of these young couples had children born in Le Sueur County. So I would love to exchange information with anyone who is also researching these families. MaryLu in Ottertail County, MN
HI MaryLu, I descend from Mary/Polly SMITH who moved to Kasota, LeSeuer Co., MN about 1867 as the widow of Hiram CHAPMAN. She was born in 1803 Tunbridge Orange VT(first cousin of Joseph Smith, Jr., The Mormon Prophet), bore her children in North Stockholm, St. Lawrence County NY and died in Kasota, LeSeuer MN in 1870. She came with her daughter Sarah SCHAPMAN, who married Francis SHAW in No Stockholm NY and my g Julius CHAPMAN b 1841 No Stockholm NY. Julius Chapman actually married his second wife Lillian Jane HODGES (b NY searching for her grandparents) in OTTERTAIL MN. Nor sure if we have any connections? Would love to know how these families traveled from St. Lawrence Co., NY (next to the River) to MN. Thank you for your reply. Sorry, I have never heard of a Mary Smith who moved to Kasota, MN. Yes, I seem to remember that some of my Smiths did live at Kasota. The immigrant was John Smith who came to Vermont from England. He had no parents and no siblings! (But I am guessing that he may have had siblings who also came to America, I just have not found them yet!!) One of John Smith's descendants became a Morman. He too is trying to prove a connection to Joseph Smith. John Smith (1738/1745-1835) died in the Town of Manchester, Bennington County, Vermont. His son Lewis Smith was born in 1811 in Vermont, and came to Delaware County, IN, during the witner of 1829-30. He married Serepta Preston in November 1830. In 1857 they came to Ottawa, Le Sueur County, MN. One of their sons, George R. Smith, worked with his father to build homes in Ottawa, MN. They also built furniture. George later left his father's business and moved to Ottertail County, MN, where he lived for over 25 years. His wife died and he returned to Le Sueur County, where he was buried in 1828. I find it interesting that we are looking in the same areas. But I have never seen any connection to your family. Good luck with your research, MaryLu in Ottertail County, MN ----- Original Message ----- From: "Diana Owen" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, July 25, 2004 10:20 AM Subject: [MNLESUEU] SMITH, GIBSON, HOOVER > HI MaryLu, > I descend from Mary/Polly SMITH who moved to Kasota, LeSeuer Co., MN > about 1867 as the widow of Hiram CHAPMAN. > She was born in 1803 Tunbridge Orange VT(first cousin of Joseph Smith, > Jr., The Mormon Prophet), bore her children > in North Stockholm, St. Lawrence County NY and died in Kasota, > LeSeuer MN in 1870. Mary Lu and others discussing SMITH's in Kasota, LeSueur Co., I am responding to a message I just received today, which was obviously hung up on the rootsweb server since July 31, so I hope I am not reinventing the wheel here... My great grandmother Mary "Polly" SMITH, who married Hiram CHAPMAN, died in Kasota, LeSueur Co., MN in 1870. She was first cousin to Joseph Smith, Jr. The Mormon Prophet. Mary Polly Smith was born in 1803 in Turnbridge, Orange Co., VT and she and her husband Hiram CHAPMAN lived in No. Stockholm, St. Lawrence Co., NY from the 1820's until she migrated to Kasota, LeSueur Co., MN in about 1867, as a widow with her daughter Sarah CHAPMAN SHAW and her son Julius CHAPMAN and their families. Also living in No. Stockholm NY was her father, Jesse SMITH and his father Asahel SMITH. Jesse was the brother of Joseph Smith, Sr. The LDS biography encyclopedia states Jesse SMITH "became enraged and acted like a madman" when his brother Joseph Smith, Sr. came to No. Stockholm in August , 1830 to baptize their father Asahel Smith. Asahel/Asael Smith died in No. Stockholm NY, in October 1830 and Jesse Smith died there in 1853. If there is someone on the list looking for SMITH information, I will be happy to help if I can. Thanks for your patience. Diana Chapman Owen MaryLu wrote: >Thank you for your reply. Sorry, I have never heard of a Mary Smith who >moved to Kasota, MN.
