Lewis Homer Smith was born in Ottawa Township on March 15, 1874. His father, George Ribble Smith, later homesteaded in Ottertail County, MN, where the family was found on the 1880 census. Lew was an adventurer - loved the scenes of Alaska so much he never left after he arrived in 1908. Photography was his favorite past time. Many in Alaska remember seeing photos taken by Lew Smith or L. H. Smith. He made friends with Dave Pettijohn in Le Sueur County after the family left Ottertail County. They took photos and wrote a story about one of their adventures. Dave was an apprentice in the local newspaper. Lew, also had worked there previously. Together they worked nights, setting up the pages of the 64-page, bound volume, runnning them off on the hand press two pages at a time, throwing in the type , setting up another two pages. The book was "officially" published in early 1896. The above statement was taken from The Cordova Daily Times, September 12, 1944, at Alaska, at the time of his death. It does not tell the name of the publication. But I would be interested in learning if a copy remains in an archives some where. MaryLu in Ottertain County
