George Washington Smith was born on January 3, some time between 1834 & 1838 at Muncie, Delaware County, IN. He was the son of John Smith and Harriet Preston of Muncie. G. W. Smith owned land in the E 1/2 of the SE 1/4 of Section 26, Ottawa Township. He served for three years in the 19th Regiment, Company E, Indiana Infantry in the Civil War, being mustered in on July 29, 1861, and mustered out on September 23, 1864. He married Mary E. Moore in Delaware County. Mary died on May 9, 1860 or 66. They had two children: Emma Jane Smith born in about 1858, and Alfareta Smith born in about 1859, After the death of Mary, G. W. Smith married #2, Elizabeth Younts on November 2, 1860. They had one daughter, Amanda Ellen Smith, who died on September 20, 1862, at age two. George married #3 "Katie" (date & maiden name unknown) in Le Sueur, MN. Katie was born in Ohio and came to Minnesota in 1866. George & Katie had three children: George Adelbert "Albert" Smith was born in 1869 in Minnesota. Benjamin Smith ws born on April 1, 1872, in Minnesota. Mary M. Smith was born on September 2, 1874, in Minnesota. Does anyone in Le Sueur County or this list have any additional information on this familly? What was Katie's maiden name & when did she marry George? (He should not be confused with his first cousin, George Ribble Smith, who also lived in that area, later lived at Deer Creek, MN, and Minneapolis & is buried at LeSueur.) MaryLu in Minnesota George died on February 28, 1907, & is buried at the Ottawa Cemetery. Katie died on december 18, 1884, at the age of 53 years, one month and 12 days.
