In his passing, the family, those who knew him intimately, and casual acquaintances suffer a loss, as well as the community. His work will continue. Men who have won the place in the hearts of the people he had done, do not die, and that is a sustaining and comforting thought. Born in St. Thomas, February eighteenth, 1874, he spent his boyhood on a farm, where he laid the foundations of the knowledge, which in later life , assisted him in building the largest livestock shipping association in the state. In 1916, he was made the Manger of the Farmer's Equity Shipping Association, which position he held at the time of his death. Year by year, he continued to increase the business, which has been an invaluable aid to the farmers, and made the name of Hugh Doherty a by word for honesty and fair dealing. His opinion sought, trusted, and loved by all with whom he associated, it will not be easy to fill the vacancy in the Shipping Association. Upon being elected to that position he took up his residence in Le Sueur, where he continued to reside. In 1917, he married Mrs. Minnie Wickland, who survives him. Mr. Doherty was keenly interested in the improvement of the town, and he was a booster who talked little and did much. This characteristic was present in all that he undertook. He left nothing undone and gave the best he could, to the task at hand. Besides his widow, Mr. Doherty is survived by three children, Joseph, Mary Louise and Vincent and two step children, Margaret and Clinton, four sisters, Mrs. Martin Spence of St. Thomas, Mrs. D. J. Coleman of St. Paul, Mrs. Dave O'Connell of St. Paul, and Mrs. Henry O'Connell of Le Sueur Center, and three brothers, Matt, of St. Thomas, Sam of Le Sueur, and M. J. Doherty of St. Paul. Solemn requiem mass was read by Rev. J. R. Coleman, a nephew of the deceased, assisted by Rev. N. Flynn, of St. Paul and Rev. Wm. Cashman of the Church of St. Anne, on Tuesday morning at ten o'clock at the church of St. Anne. At that hour the business houses closed as a mark of respect to one of the city's best loved citizens. The children's choir furnished the music during the service. Those with whom he had been closely associated in business and with whom he had formed a life long friendship bore the body to the grave: Jerry Clifford, Leo Hayden, Wm. Sunderman, O. A. Pinney, Cyril Frank a! nd James Morgan. Interment was made in Calvary Cemetery. Those from out of town in attendance at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Coleman, Mr. and Mrs. Dave O'Connell, and M. J. Doherty of St. Paul, Pat Doherty, Mrs. Oscar Bye and Mrs. Wm. Gooly, of Minneapolis, Mrs. E. J. Goor and Mrs. Vernon Butler of Montevideo, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry O'Connell of Le Sueur Center besides friends and relatives who live in the Le Sueur community.
