I'm looking for descendants of Thomas and Sarah (Purnell) Montgomery. He was b in Ireland, 1841, d. St. Paul 1907. She was b in England, d in Mpls in 1940. They had 7 children -- Thomas was prominent in the Masons -- his father was a Methodist minister. After coming from Canada in 1856, the Montgomery family lived in Cleveland, Le Sueur Co. He met Sarah while serving in the 7th MN Infantry, in South Bend, outside Mankato. He joined in 1862, transferred to the US Colored Troops after the Indian campaign was over, and retired as a Major in 1867. That's when he and Sarah married, and they moved to St. Peter, where he was a partner with Theo. G Carter in a real estate business, and the children were born. They moved to St. Paul ca. 1890 -- both Thomas and Sarah were very prominent in various Masonic enterprises -- also members of the Hamline Methodist Episcopal Church. Son Edmund was a Hennepin Co. District Court Judge. Charles lived in St. Paul, Thomas in New Brighton. I know daughter Edith went to Pipestone, and another son (Grant) to Texas. But I've not been able to track all the children -- I am interested in corresponding with descendants. Any hints or clues gladly accepted. Thanks -- Mary Mary Bakeman Park Genealogical Books, publishers of MN Genealogical Journal e-mail [email protected] WWW http://www.parkbooks.com/

I am looking for descendant's of the Chester Chamberlain family of Le Sueur, MN I know both Chester and his wife Florence, are both buried in Calvary Cemetery in Ottawa Township. I found them in the 1920 census and I found the 5 children below listed in the 1930 census living in the city of Le Sueur. For some strange reason I couldn't find them indexed in 1930 anywhere, so I went through the city of Le Sueur page by page and miraculously, did find them. They are indexed as Chaon, when it plainly says Chester Chamberlain as head. I think the transcriber may have been having problems, as the census taker did have somewhat strange penmanship. Anyway, the fact is, that I found them, and I was so happy. Chester was brother of my great grandfather Leroy of Clinton, Rock Co., WI. If there are any descendant's out there I'd love to connect or if anyone knows of this family also I would greatly appreciate hearing from them. Chester was in the MN death Index and I ordered his death certificate, he actually died at the Rochester Hospital in Olmsted Co, but they always lived in Le Sueur I believe. I am leaving birthdates out on the children as they may still be living. Thank you all very much! I am a new subscriber to the LeSueur List. I am looking for any info on the following surnames... Grimes Doheny Raverty Bill Grimes Round Rock, TX
On October 11, 1860, Jonas Hoover married Sarah A. Smith in Delaware County, IN. In February 1866, they left Delaware County, IN, with her uncle, Lewis Smith. (Lewis was a builder by trade, but had left Ottawa in 1862 at the time of the Souix Uprising.) There were four covered wagons. One was driven by Lewis Smith with his wife, Serepta & younger children. The second wagon was driven by George Smith with his "wife & four" children. This information was taken from an interview by Nancy Gibson which appeared in the Muncie, IN, newspaper. According to the family history, George married Mary E. Moore in 1856 in Delaware County, IN. Apparently Mary (Moore) Smith died before they left for Minnesota. His third wife was "Katie" who died on December 18, 1884, and is buried at Ottawa. As for the "four children" in their wagon in 1866, I find only Emma Jane (born 1858) and Alfareta (born 1859) (NOT "four children"). But it could be that he married his second wife, Elizaeth Younts before he left for Minnesota and they had a daughter Amanda Ellen born in 1862. But that still does not make "four children"! The third wagon was driven by Jonas Hoover and his wife & two children. The fourth wagon was driven by Nancy Smith Gibson, and her new husband, Samuel Gibson. Nancy and Samuel Gibson later returned to Delaware County, IN. George Washington Smith, Katie, & some children are also buried at Ottawa. Lewis & Serepta Smith spent the rest of their lives in Le Sueur County. Jonas and Sarah A. Smith were never found again! (Apparently they were beamed up by space aliens!) Anyone have any more to add to this story? MaryLu in Minnesota

Andrew Jackson Gessell married Mary R. Smith. She was born on March 2, 1835, in Delaware County, IN. She married Andrew on November 6, 1856. What was Katie's maiden name & when did she marry George? (He should not be confused with his first cousin, George Ribble Smith, who also lived in that area, later lived at Deer Creek, MN, and Minneapolis & is buried at LeSueur.) MaryLu in Minnesota George died on February 28, 1907, & is buried at the Ottawa Cemetery. Katie died on december 18, 1884, at the age of 53 years, one month and 12 days.
Bobbi, I am also a descendant of John EMMERS. His burial is an interesting story. BTW see for my tree: > http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=lleschan My now long diseased grandmother, Agnes Petronella Mader FRANK, was the granddaughter of John EMMERS. She told me many stories about Petronella EMMERS, few if any on John. Well, anyway on to his death. He was buried in Heidelberg, MN with a fine metal marker. Along about 1930, 40 the parish priest got tired of the messy bramble covered cemetery and decided to bulldoze ,i.e., cleanup, the whole thing into an adjacent creek, my uncle, alois, says . Piles of markers were on the church grounds. As of 1980, I found none and Alois said he never seen one for John. I know it was illegal, but that's never stopped priest before and since. I don't remember why I don't know his death date? I'm copying the other active EMMERS descendant, Malinda and her mother Gerry. Maybe they know. That's it. Yours Ed SCHANUS. Hi everyone, I was wondering if somebody might be able to help me find a death date for one of my ancesters. I am looking for the death of John Emmers. His wife Petronella's (Nellie) obit was in the LeSeuer County Leader on May 29, 1902. In her obit it states that her husband John died thirteen years earlier. So he died about 1888. It also said that in 1882 they located in Heidelberg. I hope this helps. Thank you, Bobbi

Dear Listmembers, The old German newspaper "Ostfriesische Nachrichten" was published by Pastor L. Hündling [Huendling} in 1882 in Iowa as a connecting paper between the people in the new American settlements and the old homeland with news and events in Ostfriesland and the "New World". Later you could find this newspaper all over the U.S. and Ostfriesland. For the period between 1882 and 1915 the issues were microfilmed around 20 - 30 years ago. According to a descendant of Pastor Huendling about 10 years ago, most of the issues between 1916 and 1971 got lost on the way to a processing center to be microfilmed. Besides Rev. Kenneth DeWall and others, who published in the past some indexes of (only) obituaries, we started in 1997 reading each newspaper for 1882 - 1915 and 1916 - 1971 (single issues) from the front to the back and taking all of the personal data in obituaries and local news into computer files. We added also interesting stories about the events in the New World - especially for the German readers -. So far we have listed 10,300 names of deceased between 1882 and 1915 plus 12,300 names of relatives, and until 1971 only 2,000 deceased / 5,000 relatives. Now we are looking for issues of this newspaper between 1916 and 1971. The undersigned would appreciate your answer if you have access to those issues. We have the microfilms from Crest Information Technologies and Heritage Crest, both in Cedar Rapids, IA. Most of the single issues after 1916 are scattered all over the U.S. and Germany. We guess, maybe finding them in the attics, etc. of old East Frisian settlements in the States. Thank you very much in advance for your help in preserving the data. Sincerely, Hans-Georg Boyken Ostfriesland-Society of Iowa, Inc. [email protected]
Sorry none of the same Patrick
