George was a farmer in Ottawa Township. He died on February 28, 1907, and was buried at the Ottawa Cemetery. He was married three times. The wife listed on the 1880 census was Katie A. Smith. Katie died December 18, 1884, age age 53 years, one month and 12 days. She is buried at the Ottawa Cemetery. She was born in Ohio. Was she married before she married George? Did she have children by a first husband? What was Katie's maiden name? The children listed on the 1880 census were as follows ("yours, mine, and ours"?): Emma Jane Smith, age 22, born in Indiana William Smith, age 14, born in Indiana. John K. Smith, age 12, born in Minnesota George A. Smith, age 10, born in Minnesota (buried at Ottawa). Benjamin Smith, age 7, born in Minnesota Maynard Smith, age 2, born in Minnesota. Does anyone have any information on these children? MaryLu in Ottertail County

I have transcribed small sections of The book History of the Minnesota River Valley that are posted to the Le Sueur and Nicollet county websites. I have noticed that someone has scanned the book and made it available on CD-ROM for about $20. Lewis Smith and his wife, Serepta, came to Ottawa, MN, in 1855. There he purchased land, built houses and furniture. At the time of the Sioux Uprising, Lewis returned all of his family, except George, to Delaware County, IN, where they remained until 1866, when they returned to Ottawa. George Ribble Smith and his father, operated a furniture factory on "the stagte line" at Ottawa. Lewis and Serepta Smith had 11 children. Most of these family members attended the M. E. Church. Their youngest daughter, Elizabeth Caroline "Carrie" Smith was born on November 8, 1850, in Delaware County, IN. She was a school teacher. She married Ellis Jones at Kasota. He was the son of Evan T. and Margaret Jones. So this is my "Smith" connection to Kasota. Maybe Carrie was teaching there at that time. Mary Lu and others discussing SMITH's in Kasota, LeSueur Co., I am responding to a message I just received today, which was obviously hung up on the rootsweb server since July 31, so I hope I am not reinventing the wheel here... My great grandmother Mary "Polly" SMITH, who married Hiram CHAPMAN, died in Kasota, LeSueur Co., MN in 1870. She was first cousin to Joseph Smith, Jr. The Mormon Prophet. Mary Polly Smith was born in 1803 in Turnbridge, Orange Co., VT and she and her husband Hiram CHAPMAN lived in No. Stockholm, St. Lawrence Co., NY from the 1820's until she migrated to Kasota, LeSueur Co., MN in about 1867, as a widow with her daughter Sarah CHAPMAN SHAW and her son Julius CHAPMAN and their families. Also living in No. Stockholm NY was her father, Jesse SMITH and his father Asahel SMITH. Jesse was the brother of Joseph Smith, Sr. The LDS biography encyclopedia states Jesse SMITH "became enraged and acted like a madman" when his brother Joseph Smith, Sr. came to No. Stockholm in August , 1830 to baptize their father Asahel Smith. Asahel/Asael Smith died in No. Stockholm NY, in October 1830 and Jesse Smith died there in 1853. If there is someone on the list looking for SMITH information, I will be happy to help if I can. Thanks for your patience. Diana Chapman Owen MaryLu wrote: >Thank you for your reply. Sorry, I have never heard of a Mary Smith who >moved to Kasota, MN. HI MaryLu, I descend from Mary/Polly SMITH who moved to Kasota, LeSeuer Co., MN about 1867 as the widow of Hiram CHAPMAN. She was born in 1803 Tunbridge Orange VT(first cousin of Joseph Smith, Jr., The Mormon Prophet), bore her children in North Stockholm, St. Lawrence County NY and died in Kasota, LeSeuer MN in 1870. She came with her daughter Sarah SCHAPMAN, who married Francis SHAW in No Stockholm NY and my g Julius CHAPMAN b 1841 No Stockholm NY.
