The MN Historical Society website offers a look-up in Minnesota Places, the geographic name reference first compiled by Warren Upham. It's at <http://mnplaces.mnhs.org/upham/index.cfm> Of course, there is no guarantee that a 'miniature lake' would be included, or that there wasn't more than one or two. But in any case, it's a neat way to find out more about MN place names and how they came about. Mary Mary Bakeman [email protected] Park Genealogical Books http://www.parkbooks.com
Hello Listers, Can anyone tell me how Lake Frances was named? I read in Floral Home by Harriet Bishop (published in 1857) that it was named while my ancestor, Frances Hobbs, was on a steamboat trip on the Minnesota River in 1853. According to the book on page 291, her fellow passengers named a miniature lake for her. Any ideas? Thank you, Janet Hobbs Johnson

When they came from Germany and lived in Wisconsin John Hermel enlisted in the Wisconsin Calvery and died and is buried in Missouri. The problem is that that John and my John have the same mother. Wilhelmine Hermel collected Johns pension while living in Le Sueur County in the 1890s. My John would have been about the same age as that John but mine did not die, he married Catherine Rademacher and moved to Elysian from Wisconsin. I ordered John Hermels military paperwork, and no where does it list his date of birth, only his mother's name. I have not to this day found 2 John Hermels for son's to Wilhelmine and John Hermel in the 1860 census. I am at a loss as to who this other person was. Also I have never been able to find a marriage record for John Hermel and Catherine Rademacher or any of her family. I do have death certificates for both from Le Sueur County. Do you think this is the same Mary Gish? She had a brother named Jacob as well as her grandfather.

Leonard Zvanovec who has given me a pedegree chart of Joseph & Theresa Zvanovec. He received this chart from then a Catholic priest Fr. Joseph Anthony DUB'E in abt. 1985 or so? I've tried to get more info on Fr. DUB'E(DUBE) & have found out he is now somewhere in CA but is not a priest. Have you had any contact with Lilly Moudry of Watonga, OK. She now lives alone since her mother Mary passed away. My two older brothers have limited contact with her but when we go to Watonga, OK we try to call her. Lilly's address is 824 Minosa Dr. @ Watonga, OK 73775. By the way do you live near Montgomery, MN. I hope to go there this year to do more of my Kolar family genealogy. It appears Leonard Zvanovec has very little interest in genealogy? This is also true of my brothers Chuck Hajek (lives in grand Junction , CO) Bill J. Hajek (lives in Wichita Falls, TX. Once again, thank you so much for your help. If you find more info on Charley or Anton Kolar, please let me hear? They along with John, Marie(gg/m) & my mothers's two brothers & one sister Eula Kolar are buried @ Watonga, OK. My mother Lilly Kolar Hajek & dad Frank Hajek are buried @ Wellington, TX. God bless, Eddie R. Hajek
