It said his parents, Olof Carlson and Ellen Hawkins, came from Grove City, Minnesota, and later lived in Kandiyohi County. I would like to find out more about the family tree of such a great inventor. The Smithsonian article said he made a lot of money and gave it all to charity, and that a book about him, by David Owen, has recently been published.
