Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/wIB.2ACI/48.2.2.3 Message Board Post: In Kandiyohi (Village), Kandiyohi, MN, 1920, there is a Susie Hibben, age 9, listed with Wm. and Pauline McDermott. Pauline is born Minnesota, parents Poland. Wm. is house mover. No other children. Susie listed as laborer. both parents born Slovak. Attends school. Date Jan 5, 1920. In Dist. 211, Minneapolis, Hennepin, MN, 1920, there is a Susie Hibbin, with children John and Susie. Mother is widow, age 39, imm 1908, b. Bleptove? Au; her parents born same place. Son John, age 12, b. Ohio, Susie, age 10, born MN. Both children have mother and father born same place whose language is Slovak. In 1930 census, there is family in Minneapolis which fit the same; mother Susan, son John, SIL and daughter, John and Susan Koblas. Here, mother Susan imm. date is 1903. Not clear in earlier census. I did a quick search, trying to find them in 1910 census. It is possible your Susie is listed twice. It was very common for children to "work out" as household help. In my experience they were more commonly older and worked closer to home. A widow with two children, especially without close relatives nearby, would have little choice but to place them with trusted families. I would guess that if this is the same Susie, she went with someone either related or from the same church who moved west. Her mama probably would have put her on the train, to be met at the destination by her family. Quite an adventure for a youngster :o) She surely would have been homesick, and likely that financial conditions did not allow her return. In 1910 census, there is another Hibben family in Minneapolis - Mike and Anna - from Aust, Slovak language. Married 8 years, 5 children born, 3 living. Parents immigrated 1902, children b. Minnesota. There are numerous Hibbens in MN birth records, often with mother's maiden name. Good luck in your search.
