    1. Unknown Photograph
    2. MARJORIE LANDREVILLE
    3. When my dad died several years and we sorted out his personal papers, there was a photograph amongst them that none of us recognize or, in fact, had ever seen before. Our photographs were always kept in a big box and the negatives, too, but this one photograph, none other, was singled out to be in "his" drawer. It's a picture of a beautiful, young girl, perhaps 6-8 years old, obviously from the late 19th or early 20th century. It's on heavy card stock, approximately 4x6-1/2 inches. The only identifier on it is the name of the studio, SAM BEDDOE, Photographic Studio. My dad was born and raised near Paynesville in Kandiyohi County -- perhaps it's from around there. He moved as a very young man to Minot, North Dakota and it's possible it's from there. Does anyone recognize this name, or make suggestions on how I might find this studio? I will ask on the Ward County, North Dakota list as well. Oh, and I googled it but did not come up with anything. I also searched the MNHS site but found nothing.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/wIB.2ACI/314.2 Message Board Post: In 1870 census, there is Knut Espeseth (age 48) with wife, Mari, and 8 children, in Norway Lake Twp., Monongalia County, MN, with a son Knut. First names indexed as "Kunt" and "Kuner"! There is Knud Espeseth, NLT, indexed as Kund, in the 1870 agricultural schedule. As far as the BLM records go, it is tough to search on names because of the wide variety of spellings used, and the BLM doesn't have a "soundex" type of search. It does have a "wildcard" search, as described here: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch/Help/SearchTips.asp If you go to the basic search page, and click on the "standard" tab, you will have many more options, which include searching "all states", or only a state, county, township or section, or searching only by date or transaction type. In the standard search, you can enter 122N for township, 36W for range (Norway Lake Twp), then hit "search". You will have a list with a link for each result. Click on the "printer friendly" link near top of page and you will see all of the results in a name list that includes: KNUDSON, KNUDT MN Kandiyohi 1/15/1875 Litchfield 2265 MN0150__.194 Click back, then go to page 2 and click on Knudt's name link; you will find this is a land grant (under "authority") for section 26. Searching in Arctander, 121N, 36W, gives: KNUTSON, KNUT MN Kandiyohi 4/10/1866 St. Cloud 2303 MN1580__.395 This is section 1. Click on doc. image, and you see the grant is to KK, of Rice County, authority is cash sale, under law of 1820). Searching all of Minnesota for 1868 gives a lot of hits with the July 1868 date, which include a KNUDT KNUDTSEN in Renville/Redwood County (114N, 37W). This appears to have been a sale of Sioux Indian land. Have you done census searches, know where your people lived? More here; good link at bottom of the page: http://www.pressenter.com/~gregboe/kandiyohi_county.htm I've done a lot of searching in Norway Lake, and it seems most folks used the patronym prior to 1880, and the gard name thereafter. Good luck.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wIB.2ACI/314.1 Message Board Post: To answer your first question, no the land descriptions don't match. The BLM record you cited is for Arctander Township, Section 1. It's often difficult to translate homestead record township and range numbers into more common map locations. Some GenWeb county web sites have this info for their counties. However, in Minnesota I found a very helpful web site at: http://www.mrr.dot.state.mn.us/geotechnical/aggregate/maps.asp The primary purpose of the site is to show gravel pits for the Department of Transportation. However it's helpful for our research because there are maps of every county in Minnesota and, most importantly, the maps show the township and range numbers that match the homestead records. At the BLM General Land Office web site at: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ in addition to doing a basic search on names, you can also do a standard search where the search options include county, township number, and range number. Searching this site you'll be able to find that Knudt Knudson had a homestead in Norway Lake Twp, Section 26, which is closer to what you're looking for but still not an exact match. You can also find out that the BLM web site has no records at all for your Section 23. This often means that the entire section was reserved for some special purpose like a railroad. People often bought this land and local and family histories often still referred to such land as a "homestead". However, since the land wasn't recorded through the national homestead program, you may only be able to find the details you need by doing research at the county land records office. And the answer to your last question is that any or all of these records, or none of these records, could be for your family. In my own family, they filed homestead papers on several different land sections. When you send for the original records, in addition to the basic land grant paper you can also get copies of any supporting documents that were filed. These extra papers often, but not always, provide you with enough information to help you decide if it's your family. Unfortunately, sometimes you'll find out that the papers you order show that there was no relation to your family. Hope this helps. Tim

The source: "Fifty Years in America" by Nils Ronning (text on Ancestry.com). There are probably excerpts, at least, on free Internet sites. Some quotes: "K. C. Holter was born December 19, 1851, at Nannestad, Romerike, Norway, and came to America at the age of mine together with his parents and six brothers and sisters. They finally settled in Fillmore county, Minnesota. Three years later the whole family was attacked by typhoid and the father died, leaving a poor widow and ten children, none of them twenty years old. " "Mother Holter was a woman with indomitable will power. With a team of oxen she brought the whole family through rain and slush, first to Pope county, Minnesota..........." Doing a search on either Ronning or K.C. will bring a lot of hits, as their published works are widely attributed. Ronning says Holter was one of the first Norwegian Lutheran ministers to "champion the cause of temperence". That puts him in common with a number of pictures saved in my Rindahl album (which includes a letter from Andrew Volstead). A mystery I hope to solve is why Ole Johanessen Rindahl's trunk has the date "1854" painted on it. It appears that his name was painted over another name, but can't make it out. The date of Ole J.'s immigration, 1869, is painted on the back side along with shipping line and destination.
