Nice collection & helpful staff. Make sure to budget enough time to tour the museum! Thomas HAM shows up as early as 1867, in the swamp east of Calhoun Lake next to the W. CLARK place. Apparently, their son Charles S. Ham may have taken the surname CHANNING sometime about 1890. Found many references to school teacher C.S. Ham and C.S. Channing of Irving Twp. He left the area after 1895 and shows up again in Washington state. Thomas went to Washington state with son Howard B. Ham by 1900. Not sure if Julia WOODMAN Ham died in Minnesota or made the move to WA. They likely attended the Methodist Episcopal services; would be interested which cemetary Irving M.E. members would have used before 1895. Daughter Sarah Ham may have married Charles L. Campbell (Willmar Republican Gazette Nov 30, 1882). Peach Campbell is listed as niece with C.S. Channing in later census in Washington.

The stevne (gathering) will include genealogy labs and research assistance with all the resources of the bygdelags (organizations): books, films, maps, family histories. There will be multiple seminars on genealogical, cultural and historical Norwegian-American topics. The program includes a tour to settlement areas of Norwegian emigrants in Richland County, North Dakota, a visit to the Hjemkomst Center in Moorhead, Norwegian food and music. There will also be a "pitchfork fondue", Norwegian craft demonstrations and vendors. Those planning a visit to Norway in the future might want to take advantage of the opportunity to learn a little of the Norwegian language in a Saturday seminar. And, of course, there will be the opportunity to visit with others who share an interest in Norwegian heritage. The stevne is open to the public although advance registration is requested. Tours and meals must be reserved in advance. Additional information, including hotel information, the program schedule and registration forms are found on the Trønderlag web site: http://www.tronderlag.org/stevne2005.htm

Pauline is born Minnesota, parents Poland. Wm. is house mover. No other children. Susie listed as laborer. both parents born Slovak. Attends school. Date Jan 5, 1920. In Dist. 211, Minneapolis, Hennepin, MN, 1920, there is a Susie Hibbin, with children John and Susie. Mother is widow, age 39, imm 1908, b. Bleptove? Au; her parents born same place. Son John, age 12, b. Ohio, Susie, age 10, born MN. Both children have mother and father born same place whose language is Slovak. In 1930 census, there is family in Minneapolis which fit the same; mother Susan, son John, SIL and daughter, John and Susan Koblas. Here, mother Susan imm. date is 1903. Not clear in earlier census. I did a quick search, trying to find them in 1910 census. It is possible your Susie is listed twice. It was very common for children to "work out" as household help. In my experience they were more commonly older and worked closer to home. A widow with two children, especially without close relatives nearby, would have little choice but to place them with trusted families. I would guess that if this is the same Susie, she went with someone either related or from the same church who moved west. Her mama probably would have put her on the train, to be met at the destination by her family. Quite an adventure for a youngster :o) She surely would have been homesick, and likely that financial conditions did not allow her return. In 1910 census, there is another Hibben family in Minneapolis - Mike and Anna - from Aust, Slovak language. Married 8 years, 5 children born, 3 living. Parents immigrated 1902, children b. Minnesota. There are numerous Hibbens in MN birth records, often with mother's maiden name. Good luck in your search.

A social worker for the city talked her mother into letting her go work for a farmer and his wife in Kandiyohi for a few weeks. According to mom, she was not allowed to go home, and only after a couple years there, she was helped home by some concerned neighbors. I don't know how much of this she had right but something happened and it has haunted me for decades as to what really happened and how it could. Was there a detention home for young people there then or some program for young people? Please help....
