This was a summer estate owned by the Joyce family, a wealthy logging family, and build initially by David Gage Joyce in 1917. The Joyce Estate was sold to the United States Forrest Service in 1974, and is now a "semi-primative nonmotorized" 4500 acre land tract open to camping. There is a great book called "Timber Connections - the Joyce Lumber Story" that tells the story of the family, and has a large chapter on the Joyce Estate, complete with pictures.
