    3. Karen This was Joseph's second marriage and Ellen's first. They had been married for 8 years. She was the mother of 4 kids, all of the kids were living. Joseph has an H for head of household and Ellen a wf for wife. These are notations made in addition to the category "relationship to head of household" which usually says Head, Wife, Son, Daughter, Lodger, Servant etc. Usually these are notations made by the census taker after taking the census while compiling statistics. In the marital status column there is a M2 for Joseph and an M1 for Ellen. Not all the census' asked how many times a person was married. You are looking at a copy/ image online of the page?
