It was a regional history of the surrounding counties and mentioned the exploration of Father Hennepin, the wars between the Sioux and Chippewa in the area and talked about how the Mandan, the Teton and other western tribes had once been located in northern Minnesota. Anyway, when I went to return it to him, I put it in his mail box at work and someone else took it. I would like to replace this book if I could. It had a white, glossy cover and was bound with a plastic ring binder. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, please send an e-mail. I have been researching my GROSS Family for a few years now, and I am stuck on my Grandfathers Uncle Ernest. Ernest moved to Calumet area around 1895 with his second wife Josephine and his children from his first marriage - Carl, Laura, and Clara. I have found a lot of information in the past few months, but I have one small problem. THEY DISAPPEARED!! Ok, so not ALL of them. Carl's family is very well documented, and Josephine must have moved away after the divorce (between 1900 and 1910). But as for the others - it seems very mysterious. Ernest, a divorced male living alone, Carl and his small family and Laura and her small family are all listed on the 1910 census. Clara is missing, but could just be due to marriage - perhaps she moved away. Laura married Henry HOLMWOOD, and they lived next door to Carl and his wife Carrie BETZLER. They each had small children and lived very close to their father Ernest. 1920 census shows no Ernest, and no HOLMWOOD family. Further searching shows Henry in St Paul, alone, boarding at someones house. He is then found in Los Angeles in 1930 - remarried with a new family. Searches for death records at the Historical Society have been fruitless, as have other death record searches. So I have many questions, was there an epidemic between 1910 and 1920 - and if so, where could I go to see a list of those who perished as a result? Were alien abductions common then? (Really, I am willing to look anywhere!) And also, is it possible that their deaths were recorded incorrectly and therefore have not made it to the Minnesota Historical Society's index. If any of you fine people have idea's for me, please let me know! Thank you very much! Liz (Gross) Douglas ==== MNITASCA Mailing List ==== Please post your Itasca county queries often.
