I grew up in Itasca Co, however, I am going to take a guess here. First, I am thinking this name of parish and village is Finnish...is it? Also I think it is a village that is extinct today. You will need to get some history of all the Post Offices and Villages in Itasca for the period of time you are searching. Maybe someone on the list has access to this information. Perhaps no one who is researching those Finnish places has relatives in Itasca county. Also when writing queries it is always a good idea to include the names, dates and places you know. From your Halttula village -Hankasalmi parish message, we thought you were looking for those places in Itasca county. Now by going back and reading your original query I see you were looking for family in the Squaw Lake area, but still no names or dates. I don't know what you are looking for or what you already know. I also suggest you do a message board search for the parish name and place a query on any message boards which seem related to the parish or the last name you are seeking. Many Finn families went to other places before and after settling or visiting the Iron Range, so you might find others searching that area of Finland by this method. I wish you good luck! Karen This was Joseph's second marriage and Ellen's first. They had been married for 8 years. She was the mother of 4 kids, all of the kids were living. Joseph has an H for head of household and Ellen a wf for wife. These are notations made in addition to the category "relationship to head of household" which usually says Head, Wife, Son, Daughter, Lodger, Servant etc. Usually these are notations made by the census taker after taking the census while compiling statistics. In the marital status column there is a M2 for Joseph and an M1 for Ellen. Not all the census' asked how many times a person was married. You are looking at a copy/ image online of the page? The question is for Joseph LaPier found in the 1910 MN census. Itasca county, Lake Jessie township. Enumeration Dist. 70, sheet # 9A. He is found on line 31. In the relationship column it says "Head" and then there is something else written..maybe an "H". Someone has told me (I've gotten this second hand) the census says this was Joseph's second marriage. I can't see where it says this. There is an "f" after "wife" and I'm thinking this could be "first". I found on Ancestry.com, from the 1930 Federal Census Severt Guarrd age 74 born about 1855 in Norway living in Bass Township. Also in the household are Olive his wife age 70 born about 1859 also br in Norway and a son Silas age 39 br in Norway. Age at first marriage was 29 for Severt and 34 for Olive, so Severt must have been married before he married Olive. Severt came to the US in 1876 and Olive in ?1882 or 92 It does not say when Silas came to the US. Both Severt and Silas were farmers. ----- Original Message ----- From: "HAZEL GAARD" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, February 29, 2004 3:37 PM Subject: [MNITASCA] Severt Gaard > Looking for the obituary of Severt Gaard, who died in Bass Lake Township (Itasca County) on December 2, 1936. > > Thank you, Hazel > > > ==== MNITASCA Mailing List ==== > Do you have old photos or postcards of Itasca county? Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZGB.2ACE/338 Message Board Post: I am looking for information on my grandmother and her family. My grandmother's name was Mae Josephine Verbeke, born September 2, 1911. Her birth certificate lists her birthplace as Deer River, MN. Parents names are: Emil Verbeke, born in Belgium 4-27-1881 and Geraldine Mick (Micks?) born in Canada 10-14 (1888?) Her family spent part of the year in MN and part of the year in Canada as I've been told my Greatgrandfather worked in the Lumber Camps. She had several brothers and sisters -- Sylvia, Charles, Lorena, Daisy, Emil Jr. Dorothy (died as an infant), George (died as an infant), Martha, Walter Albert and Helen. The story goes that Emil Verbeke immigrated to Canada as a result of a fight in Belgium when he believed he had killed someone. He didn't learn until later that the man recovered completely. At that time, instead of returning to Belgium, he chose to stay breaking his mother's heart and causing his father to disown him. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Julie
