    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZGB.2ACE/357 Message Board Post: My grampa is James A. Root, married to Mary Mae Davis from Michigan. James was born in Canada, lived a brief time in NY then the family moved to MI. When he was 15 yrs. old he worked for the Belden Lumber Company in Chesaning, MI where a steam boiler blew up and his eyes were scalded leaving him virtually blind . . . could tell only daylight from dark. In 1910, as my mother related the story to me, they were living in Alliance, NB and a "cousin" from Grand Rapids who owned the local livery barn and hotel told him he would give him work if they came to live in Grand Rapids, so the family came by covered wagon to the local area. The cousin's name was Leonard Root, Foster Root is a descendant of Leonard. Anyway . . . I don't know that grampa ever did work for Leonard, but they ended up living north of Deer River until about 1917/18. Grampa worked for the Waleski Sawmill as did his son Clyde. Can anyone fill in any blanks here? did he work for Leonard? did they live in Grand Rapids for awhile? what took them north of Deer River? what kind of work was he able to perform at the sawmill? Questions, questions, all the time questions . . . will appreciate any feedback. Jeanine

    3. I went to school with Robert Prather's children. And they were neighbors of ours in North Busti (Effie). I can probably get some info for you when I go up to Bigfork to visit my mother at the Nursing home this fall. I also need to go to the cemetery and clean some stones that are getting bad. I got married and moved in 1955 so was not there when Edna passed away. gayle > > Does anyone have any information on Robert Prather married to Edna Carlson from Effie area? This was a summer estate owned by the Joyce family, a wealthy logging family, and build initially by David Gage Joyce in 1917. The Joyce Estate was sold to the United States Forrest Service in 1974, and is now a "semi-primative nonmotorized" 4500 acre land tract open to camping. There is a great book called "Timber Connections - the Joyce Lumber Story" that tells the story of the family, and has a large chapter on the Joyce Estate, complete with pictures.

The census shows her as born in Indiana and she died in Kent, Washington in June of 1927. She was staying with Aunt Jo. Marilyn is Doris' daughter and much more knowledgeable about the Matthews clan as they all lived in Grand Rapids, MN. I wrote at one point to the city clerk in Grand Rapids and she sent me a bunch of cemetery info on the family which I will be glad to share.
