I was at a family picnic with my mother's first cousin. At the picnic I did a family chart. I assumed that my mother's first cousin is my uncle once removed, since his father was my mother's uncle. In reading I may be wrong. What is the definition of an uncle once removed? I have seen this term used before. Looking for burial place of my gr-grandfather Louis HETU. According to his obit printed in the Itasca County Independent, he died 8/14/1904. It stated he was a well known resident of "the village" which likely refers to Grand Rapids. The obit further states that "the funeral was held from St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. O'Mahoney officiating". No mention was made of burial place nor of survivors though I know he had a wife and 2 adult children living at that time. (Although the obit appears complete, I wonder if the last portion mentioning survivors could have been missed in the copy process.) Can anyone advise as to the most likely burial place? Efforts to contact St. Joseph's Church were unsuccessful nor was a death cert on file. Thank you in advance for any assistance. Jeanne K (in California)

She was a "step-sister" to Minnie Cochran when he and Al got married. Minnie's step-mother , at that time, was my Great Aunt Mary Krugel. Mary's first husband was Frank Clark, and they had 3 children - Herman, Harry, and Hazel. ( Actually, Herman married a Hazel, too, so this could be the "sister-in-law" being referred to). Frank Clark died prior to 1910, and Mary Krugel Clark later married John Cochran, Minnie's father. I'm not sure when John and Mary were married, but all their kids all knew each other in Grand Rapids prior to that. Your ggGrandfather Al H Furley lived next to Mary Clark and near John Cochran for a number of years . Minnie and Al were also best friends of my grandparents, Joe and Lettie (Betts) Krugel. When Lettie died, in 1920, less than a year after giving birth to her fourth child, my Grandpa, who worked in "the woods", had to find someone to take care of his 4 children. All 4 went to different homes, my Dad going to live with Al & Minnie. He lived with them until about 1927, then all 4 kids moved back with their father in a "one room shanty" on McKinney Lake. Your other question was about Fostorias nickname, Fannie. I have found 2 nicknames for her. Early, she was called "Floss". Later , she went by "Fannie". Her true name, however, was Fostoria Becker. I have sent this, and other info with it, to your e-mail, but don't know if it was received. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He lived with Al and Minnie Furley from the time he was 5 years old for about 5 years (after his mother passed away). He was living with them when Mary Katherine was a baby and when Bill was born. My Dad (Harland Joseph Krugel) talked about "helping" at the bait shop when he was a kid. Regarding your grandmother "Minnie" --- She was originally Mignonette Cochran, d/o John and Fostoria Cochran. I am not directly related to the Cochrans, but have some information about them. "Minnie" not only hunted and fished, but she painted also. She painted a picture of the little cabin (where I think she was born) way out in the woods. Respond by direct email to me, and I will be glad to exchange info.
