    1. Re: [MNHennep] Divorces & census records
    2. Thanks all for the responses. I didn't think it was just my family, but it was interesting enough that I thought I would check. Divorce was always harder on women than men. Divorced women were less likely to remarry. And there was much more stigma...apparently for some reason it was a feeling that somehow it had to be the woman's fault... she either was a problem, or refused to put up with HIS problems. When I mentioned this subject to my mother, she had decided opinions on both the ex-wives that I referred to. She would not even consider that the men might have been at fault, but obviously she knew the men well as close relatives. My grandmother had a female cousin who was married and divorced four times... rather amazing in the early 1900's. Ethel was a trip! My grandmother referred to her as a "floozie". On the census she listed herself as single or widowed, and only the last one did she indicate divorced. She also listed herself as much younger than she really was, and the older she got the bigger the lie. She smoked cigars and drank with the men after dinner, and told more than her share of bawdy jokes. Grandma also said she was "disgraceful". She ran a boarding house and my great uncle lived there for a time in his very early 20's, until his mother realized that it was Ethel he was renting from. She went into a rage and he moved out. For the heck of it, I sure wish I had met Ethel. Jo ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
