Have been following the discussion of babies that might have been given away. Worked on something like this for a relative. I had success spending time learning all I could about the relatives of each parents. Sometimes these babies were given to an aunt/uncle on either side to raise. Then don't forget close friends. If this was a doctor that did this as a side business, it might go further. Check the newspapers that might have recorded the births in a particular hospital. Get death records of each of these adult relatives, obits, records of the birth's and baptisms of each of their children....... might prove helpful. Newspaper articles, especially in smaller towns, of possible adoption of a child; showers for a mother-especially after the child was born might be a clue. Put together a timeline/history of each of these families....... Don't leave any stone unturned. Don't get stuck with the oral history of any of these families. Get proof. Check probate records for each of these adult relatives--guardianship records or other court documents for each of these adult relatives......... Good Luck Susanne
Hi John, I find Donna's story interesting, in that we have a similar situation in our own family. My aunt had a baby when she was 15 yrs old and was told the baby died. My mother was about 11 years old then, but remembered when it happened so I have an approx. year for this baby's birth/death too, (1933) but no birth or death record appears. So, we're fairly sure my aunt was lied to and the baby given up for adoption. Doctor Merkert was our family doctor too , I remember him well. His office was on Franklin and Chicago Ave. and I lived just a few blocks away from Deaconess Hosp. My daughter works in the medical insurance field and I've asked her to see if she can find out what happened to the records for Deaconess Hosp. as a possibility Donna's brother was born there. However, there's a better chance he was born at Minneapolis General Hosp., now Hennepin County Medical Center. I believe that's where my aunt delivered her baby too. My aunt's baby was born about 1933 though. My daughter thinks Deaconess Hosp. is now used as an Adult Drug and Alcohol treatment facility, but is going to look into it. I have a 1955 Minneapolis City Directory and found Don A. Buchanan listed, address was 1206 Humboldt Ave N. This doesn't help at all I suppose, but the grandmother's name was not listed. If my daughter can find any information on the hosp. I'll let you know. There's a good chance Donna's brother was adopted out and the records are sealed in Hennepin County. I'd like to find out what became of my aunt's baby too, since he/she has a brother who would also like to know. I haven't really pursued it much, except for trying to find a birth or death record. Good morning, everyone. This is further information from Donna. I noticed on the list that her e-mail didn't come through. Her address is [email protected] Here is the info: Her mother's name was Helen Leona MAYCLIN, b. 8/12.22, father was Donald Alexander BUCHANAN, grandmother's married name was Mrs. Whilhemina BUCHANAN. They were members of St. Stephen's Catholic parish in Minneapolis. The 1941 date for her brother's birth is an educated guess from what little is known. She and her other siblings were born at Deaconess Hospital in Minneapolis and had the same doctor, Dr. Merkert. Her parent's were not married at the time and the grandmother may have been involved in taking the baby. There have been a few replies, and thank you for your help and ideas. I hope you can help Donna find her brother. Good afternoon, everyone. :-) A friend of mine, her name is Donna, wants to find her brother. He was probably adopted out at birth. He was born in 1941, probably in Minneapolis. Their mother says that he was stillborn. However, there is no record of the birth or death. Donna has enough information to believe that he was not stillborn and that their grandmother took him away. Donna's sister is terminally ill. She would like to find her brother. If anyone has information and suggestions on where to look, please let her know. Her e-mail address is in the CC: so you can reply directly to her or back to me and I will forward. Thank you. At that point 7th street is a bridge over 394 going into downtown, Annie I don't think so - 606 33rd Anve N is east of Lyndale and north of Lowry. I double checked on Mapquest for both the 606 33rd and the 33XX 6th Ave N. And that is the area. I lived on 33rd Ave N and Girard which is just a short distance west of 6th Ave N. I think you are looking too far south. Jo
Dear Hennepin County List, What a delight to read your emails on the Camden area of North Minneapolis! Jo, that was a wonderful word picture of the area, and I will save what you wrote. Wouldn't it be nice if we could step back in time and see places the way they once were? At least they can always be that way in our memories. Thank you so much for sharing those, and the history of the area. I loved your story about the Swedish Lutheran churches. Sincerely, Katherine Bellingham, WA

Her address was 606 33rd Avenue North/3307 North 6th Street. This is north of Fairview Park and west of I-94. >> It should be right under 94. Lyndale is the 700 block and that is both east of west of 94 as the service road of it. Either that or it should be under the garbage burner, which is north of 7th Street and south of Olson Highway. If you have a map, look at the intersection of 7th and Olson Highway. Northwest corner is occupied by a Wells Fargo bank, Northeast corner is the Metro Transit bus garage, southeast corner is the garbage burner, southwest corner a small company of some kind, with Sharing Caring Hands towards downtown on 7th Street, just past it, then a daycare center, then some housing run by Sharing Caring Hands. At that point 7th street is a bridge over 394 going into downtown, and the housing sits kind of underneath but next to the bridge. On the west side of 94 there used to be a housing project on the north side of Olson Highway and another one on the south side of Olson Highway. The area had deteriorated badly and about 3 years ago both projects were demolished after being used by the police as practice grounds for entering and capturing druggies, etc., which had been what had been happening alot there. Or trying to defuse a domestic abuse situation, which was also a very high call rate in that area before they evacuated it. In fact that demolition and several other project demolitions caused such a housing shortage for a while that our homes all over the Twin Cities were going up 25,000 a year or more a year for a while there. They are now building condos on both sites. North of the bus company and toward downtown is an industrial area, that is being reclaimed and renovated into an area with jobs, but basically cleaner industries, like Duffy paper, some printing companies, Muscle Bound Bindery. The garbage burner has been linked to businesses and buildings in the downtown area to provide heat and it is actually a fairly aesthetically pleasing compound. The bus company building was built in the '80s and is also a nice clean, well kept place (if I do say so myself, considering I work there). The buildings are set in a L shape, so the buses that are left in the yard for any reason, etc. are not seen as they are behind the buildings. However, buses are not usually left outside very much, they are mostly kept within the building. From 94 (which at that point is actually running north and south because it has made a turn) west and north of Olson Highway it is mostly resdential with some light industry along 94 and Lyndale. South of Olson Highway is in the process of improvement. Like I said, condo's are being built to replace the projects that were there. And south of there is an industrial area that is also slowly being renovated and reclaimed. The old Buckby Mears building (I think that is what it was) is now an International Market Square building. Between 94 and the river alot of the warehousing is being reclaimed and renovated and is housing light industry. Alot of the old dilapidated buildings on Washington Avenue have been demolished and there are now new light industrial buildings there. East of there, along the river a River Walk has been constructed and behind it new condos have been built. Some of the old warehouses have been renovated into condos. From a really bad slum area it is slowly becoming a much better looking and safer place, although because of all the bridges over 94 and 394, the large open spaces the safety factor will never be that of a neighborhood (which in itself, has deteriorated because of the fact that we are talking larger cities here). Annie in Minnesota
Hi Jo, Did you ever get the e-mail with the census? I've tried sending to your personal e-mail and haven't received a response so wondering if for some reason you're not getting them? Dear Katherine of Bellingham: By 1914 this area at 33rd and 6th was solidly residential and a part of Baker's 4th Addition; se corner had 4 structures from lot 7 and extending north into lot 8 which perhaps explains the addresses you provided.. The Hennepin County History Museum has old City Directories for this period and possibly more. Perhaps a volunteer there can help you, if you can identify your historical desires, so Google over to there. Happy Historical Trails, Robert P. Mosedale Bloodhound Research, P. A. [email protected]
