A nice lady at Washburn-McReavy Mortuary told me that when they bought out/merged with another mortuary, they combined the two names for the new company. The old, original mortuary name will appear after W-McR. Shirley

I was also chasing down some records for a cousin. Never was able to finish the job as I got ill. Still on my to do list. I had visited 3 homes who had taken over for others and did find some records that way, but the closed one I just never got around to finishing. Annie

Janet According to a local mortuary, there are no requirements for keeping the records. They are "business" records and not official documents. If a mortuary is bought out or merges with another, then the records may be kept as the funeral home is still in business under a different name. But if they simply close, those records may well eventually be destroyed. You might want to check with the Minnesota Historical Society to see if they have any records from defunct funeral homes, but there would be government office that would maintain them. Jo
Janet, You could try calling the phone number or contacting the staff by e-mail at the Mortuary Science Section. at the MN Health Dept. http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/hpsc/mortsci/contact.htm E-mail addresses are listed on the site for the Staff. They may be able to help with records from mortuaries that are no longer in business. As Jo said, if the business was just taken over by another company they would have probably kept the records. But if they closed completely hopefully they would have deposited the records with the Historical Soc. or possibly the MN Health Dept. Just a guess, but here's the information I found: Minnesota Department of Health Mortuary Science Section 121 East Seventh Place, Suite 400 P.O. Hi everyone: How do you determine where the records for a funeral home went when the funeral home is no longer in existence? For example, The Burr Mortuary (Minneapolis). Would you email the MN Dept of Health via their website, or is there another source? Thanks! Janet St. Louis, MO __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Protect your identity with Yahoo! Greetings I wonder if any one has information of a morturary that I am looking for. I have it on 2 death certificates, but am unable to find it anywhere. On one certificate is says Fred C. Heinricks (this in 1923) and the other Schulenberg and Heinricks (in 1911). I would appreciate any information on this Morturary and where their records are kept. Thank You. The 1885 Minnesota State Census for all of Hennepin County, including the city of Minneapolis, has been completed and available online at http://kinsource.com/index.htm Many of the other counties are completed and more being transcribed. Subscriptions are very reasonable and is a great resource! Claudia, I was interested in Witts' Market too. I asked the list about it last spring when I found out my Grandmother worked there making chocolates and my Dad made deliveries for the store after school. Apparently, my Grandfather was a friend of the owners. As I remember you referred me to MHS for photos on the store. My Dad was visiting me at the time and was able to view those pictures . It was a wonderful moment for him reminiscing about those days long gone. Your simple thoughtfulness became a kind gesture. Hi, Claudia, I was the original person, but I'd sure like to see the article. I have fond memories of Witt's from when I was a child. Shirley
Shirley, I'll scan the pages and try to get a good one. If not you can send me your snail mail address privately and I'll send you Xerox copies. Will be sending in a bit here.
