If you don't find a picture of the home, let me know. I live very close and go to St. Paul a couple times a month. I could drive by the address and take a digital photo for you then email it to you offline to your email address. Here's a photo and a short write up: http://www.historichomesofminnesota.com/ Built in 1881 by Cyrus B. Thurston, this home stands out on a beautiful corner lot and is one of the only homes on the avenue with an original date panel built into one of the gables. Originally the home was painted white and had a beautiful full facade front porch that slightly wrapped around the western corner of the home. You can easily see the original outline of the roof, around the only remaining portion of the porch. The architectural design of the home is Victorian Queen Anne and was the first built on the Avenue in this style. Common elements that the home has with other Queen Anne homes are the numerous gables, dormers, and high pitched roof. The home also has bay windows and porches that break up the surface of the walls, giving the home a unique feel that only a Queen Anne can give. Unfortunately the architect of the home is unknown. The home boasts approximately 5200 finished square feet, has two stories + finished attic space, 4 bedrooms and 4.5 baths, and sits on a little less than half an acre. Hope that helps, Kathy www.Kiva.org - loans that change lives. Hello list, Have several questions that perhaps someone can clarify, and/ or offer some guidance. My names of interest are James MacLeod b. abt 1870, d. 7/15/1912 in Hennepin Co. He was an architect and had lived at 485 Summit Ave, a house which he drafted and resided in. Does this home still exist? Where is St. Paul Co.? Other names are Rudolph Schiffman b. 8/1845 d. 12/1926. He supposedly lived at 495 Summit Ave from about 1893 until the early 1900's. Does this home still exist? Rudolph Schiffman was a medicine manufacturer with a plant supposedly at 369 Jackson St. Would these buildings still stand today? Story has it that he moved his medicine manufacturing to California and Berlin in the early 1900's. Anyone with any knowledge of either the MacLeod's or Schiffman's- I would greatly appreciate in hearing from you. Additionally, anyone that can provide knowledge of these areas would be helpful also. Thanks in advance, Kenny Schmid in KY http://schmidgenealogy.homestead.com/Schmid.html "Connecting Great Relatives-1 Person at a time" > All outbound mail is virus scanned for your protection
Hello List, Recent research has included James Allen MacLeod, architect of The Lake County Courthouse back in 1906. James was born abt. 1870 and died in Hennepin County on 7/15/1912. Considering the many MacLeod's whom based on today's searches, still live in Minnesota, I am curious to know if there is anyone whom perhaps connects with the MacLeod family of this young man. Am interested in hearing from any MacLeod researchers. Will share all info I have in exchange for same. Thanks in advance, Kenny Schmid in KY http://schmidgenealogy.homestead.com/Schmid.html "Connecting Great Relatives-1 Person at a time" > All outbound mail is virus scanned for your protection
Good afternoon. Could anyone tell me during what period SP were in business? May be they still are? Their location was 309 Nicollet Ave, MSP. I'm trying to find a lost relative. My only lead is a picture taken by SP after 1880. Thanks. Tor in Nwy Hilsen Tor Graven +47 918 54 158 "graven16@online.no"
There is a card file on MN photographers in the Weyerhaueser Library at the MN History Center. It provides dates, locations, business genealogy (who sold the business to whom and its new name, etc.), and other notes. Not on-line -- but could be helpful if you are trying to locate what happened to the records or negatives of a photographer. Shared by a list member. How true, how true. When I started my research I did not know where my grandparents had married and did not know which cemetery they rested in, though I did pretty much know (correctly) that they were most likely buried in Minneapolis where all my aunts and uncles resided and where my father grew up and where I spent all my summer vacations with a much beloved aunt. It wasn't however until my research that I learned her house which I was so very comfortable in as a child had been the home of my grandparents built by them in Minneapolis in 1871, somehow it escaped my attention that it was the house in whih my father grew up. The house still stands. About ten years ago someone went to the neighborhood and photographed it for me. It remains much as it was when I spent summers there. Elaine http://www.24hourmuseum.org.uk/nwh_gfx_en/ART50259.html 24 Hour Museum Tuesday, 4 Spetember 2007 SURVEY SHOWS HALF OF US DON'T KNOW OUR GREAT-GRANDPARENTS' NAMES By Graham Spicer A survey commissioned by the National Trust has revealed that more than half of us don't know the names of any of our great-grandparents. The Ipsos MORI poll showed that 57 per cent of adults aged over 15 couldn't name their great-grandparents and a further 14 per cent could only name one great-grandparent. Findings were similar among all age groups. The National Trust revealed the results as it gears up for Heritage Open Days 2007 on September 8, when it opens many of its properties to the public for free. This year it will be encouraging people to discover more about their family history with many of its venues staging special oral history events or having professional genealogists on hand to help visitors uncover their past. Dr Nick Barratt, historian and one of the experts behind BBC TV's Who Do You Think You Are? is taking part in a presentation at Attingham Park, Shrewsbury. "In one respect I'm really quite shocked by how few of us know about our not-too-distant relatives, given the incredible interest in family history at the moment, and the wealth of resources online," he said. "However, in our hectic lives we tend to forget about the past and concentrate on the present. Perhaps these statistics will make us slow down a bit and think about talking to our relatives before we lose these vital links forever." The events are part of the Trust's Your History Matters campaign, and as well as the events has launched a 'surname profiler' on its website and a 'memory map' on which to upload and share memories. For more details and to find out what events are happening visit the National Trust's Your History Matters website: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/yourhistorymatters For more information about Heritage Open Days and to access a user-friendly online directory listing all the events taking place in England, see www.heritageopendays.org

Margie, I checked the 1880-81 Minneapolis City Directory and there were no photographers listed under Burdick. The 1882-83 directory listed O.C. Burdick, photographer, J.H. Fouch, b. 107 Washington Ave N. The 1885-86 shows an Osman Burdick, (Lee & B) at 301 S. Wash. I am sorry to announce of the death of one of our listers, Eugene Barnes from California, who passed away on Friday August 3rd from COPD and Leukemia. Gene had family connections to Minnesota and has contributed several cemetery listings for the Hennepin genweb and was a lookup volunteer for our county. He and his wife would have celebrated 51 years of marriage on August 4th. Claudia Schuman
