Forwarded to me, author unknown but too good not to pass along. It is New Year's Eve, 1852 and John Smith sits at his desk by candlelight. He dips his quill pen in ink and begins to writes his New Year's resolutions: ********************************** 1. No man is truly well-educated unless he learns to spell his name at least three different ways within the same document. I resolve to give the appearance of being extremely well-educated in the coming year. 2. I resolve to see to it that all of my children will have the same names that my ancestors have used for six generations in a row. 3. My age is no one's business but my own. I hereby resolve to never list the same age or birth year twice on any document. 4. I resolve to have each of my children baptized in a different church -- either in a different faith or in a different parish. Every third child will not be baptized at all, or will be baptized by an itinerant minister who keeps no records. 5. I resolve to move to a new town, new county, or new state at least once every 10 years -- just before those pesky enumerators come around asking silly questions. 6. I will make every attempt to reside in counties and towns where no vital records are maintained or where the courthouse burns down every few years. 7. I resolve to join an obscure religious cult that does not believe in record keeping or in participating in military service. 8. When the tax collector comes to my door, I'll loan him my pen, which has been dipped in rapidly fading blue ink. 9. I resolve that if my beloved wife Mary should die, I will marry another Mary. 10. I resolve not to make a will. Who needs to spend money on a lawyer. 11. I resolve to not clutter up the good farm pasture with headstones, that will just get broken or fade with time anyway. 12. I resolve to protect my family and friends privacy, by giving false names and places for events. 13. I resolve to never give the correct accounts of misdeeds in the family, so when Uncle Lem shot that fellow and was tried for murder, my children will be told he stole a cow. 14. I resolve to never trim the family cemetery of brush and tangle weed, to keep out any one doing that silly Genealogical work. 15. I resolve to always alternate my child's and wife's first and middle names when the census taker comes around, just to give him practice with his spelling. 16. I resolve to come from Ireland (where there are no records, or, if there are, they can only be examined by visiting the exact village and, pleading with the local clergy, (who is hostile to anyone not of his belief, which of course you are) and/or handing over a fee equal to or exceeding your yearly income for one hour's research which may not find anything.) 17. I resolve that not only shall I NOT die in my country of birth, nor shall my children (yea verily) unto the sixth generation. 18. I resolve that I shall call my children by odd names which the enumerator shall spell incorrectly. 19. I resolve that I shall be absent on the night of the census. 20. I resolve that if unable to be absent on census night I shall endeavor to be enumerated twice. 21. I resolve that when I die my children/wife are instructed to give the wrong details for my death certificate. 22. I resolve that I and most of my family shall die suddenly just before death certifications started to be used, in a parish where easy access to the records ceased the previous year. **************************************See AOL's top rated recipes (http://food.aol.com/top-rated-recipes?NCID=aoltop00030000000004)

thanks so much for your prompt reply and the great information...will take some sorting out.. given that the place of birth of James Amor was listed as "NY"? when if he is ours, it should read "England"...? I have 2 obits from Hamilton ON newspapers , where first, 1893 at death of father, James is listed as living in Minneapolis and in 1905 at death of his "wife', her son, George is living in Minneapolis..no mention of husband, James. how very strange indeed. This is what I found. The first one may not be the right family, since in the 1900 census James states he had been married for 20 years. Hope this helps. Dear listers: I am new to this list having just discovered that our AMOR family operated a funeral home in Minneapolis about 1890? to ?1910? James Amor came from Hamilton, Wentworth county, ONtario. He and his parents and siblings had emigrated to Ontario about 1847 from Somerset England. I believe he had a son, GEORGE AMOR, who lived at Minneapolis in 1893 also. , possibly also in the funeral business? I would really appreciate help with a census about 1890 , 1900 or 1910...to determine who lived in the households of: JAMES AMOR [I believe that James died 1918] and /or GEORGE AMOR? James' wife Emma Blachford Amor died at Hamilton 1905 and was living with her daughter at Hamilton in 1901 census. I am wondering about this as when James' father died [John Amor, d. 1893 Hamilton] James' locale is listed as Minneapolis, MN. Looking forward to your replies and assistance, thanks Liz of Canada
I've "rescued" a group of old photographs belonging to the FRENCH Family of Maine and Massachusetts. The first is a photograph of Frank S. FRENCH which was taken at the Curtis Studio in Lewiston, ME. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1870's or 1880's with Frank likely in his 20's or 30's at the time it was taken. The second photograph is one of Frank Grenvelle FRENCH which was taken at the L. S. Tapley Studio in Lewiston, ME. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Frank about 1 year old at the time. The third photograph is identified as Lydia FRENCH HARMAN. This photograph was taken at the Towne Studio in Boston, MA, likely in the 1880's with Lydia appearing to be in her 30's or 40's at the time it was taken. Based on limited research and thanks to the assistance of a FRENCH Family Researcher, I was able to gather the following additional information regarding this family: Frank S. Hei Listers, I'm a newbie. I thought that I would get my great grandfather's name in the archives in case anyone is looking for him or his family. Asle KNUDSON was born 19 Jan 1844 in Flaaten, Aal, Buskerud, Norway. His father was Knud Asleson Nygaard and his mother Birgit Knutsdtr Flaaten. When his mother died in 1850, Asle went to live with his uncle Herman. In 1865 he left Norway and arrived in Quebec, Canada. From Quebec, he traveled by train, ferry and boat until he reached the home of his uncle Elling Asleson Foss in Decorah, Iowa. Asle married Synnove (Susan) Fosse in 1866. Three years later, he became a citizen and bought his own farm. Asle and Susan had many children. (Names and dates of birth and death available upon request) One of these children was my grandmother. He became a preacher 1872 and retired in 1910. He died at his home in Minneapolis, MN on 29 Sep 1939. I wish I had known him. If anyone is interested in this family, I'll be pleased to correspond with them. Sue in Quincy, MA

He is 77 in 1900 chances are he died prior to 1910. I did look for him in 1910 but I didn't find he or his wife, Ludwig either for that matter. Guessing they stayed in LaCrosse until Frank died. You would have to contact the court house to find a death record for him. Wisconsin doesn't have much on he Internet for death records in that time period. Maybe down the road they will. Did you have information on Veronica? I don't, I am just wondering if Mary's death record listed her mother as Veronica and what happened to her. Marge Unfortunately marriage applications for any year seem to give very little information. I know my own from 1969 gives only our names, ages, and whether we were previously married, and I never signed it, my groom applied for it and signed it, I never had anything to do with it. I think the only time a parent's name might appear on them is if the bride or groom is underage and permission needed to be given. I recall an interesting family story about one of my relatives from the early 1900's. She had a suitor but these days we would call him a stalker. He kept after her to even allow him to court her, but she wanted nothing to do with him. He actually applied for, and was given a marriage license and attempted to get her to marry him by force. Family history says that her father and brothers managed to step in and "convince" him to go away and leave her alone. If you don't know dates of birth or bride's maiden name they would be useful but otherwise probably not much. Jo Hogle In a message dated 12/5/2007 8:27:40 P.M. I thought I would give a friendly warning to anyone thinking about ordering film, for $5.50 each, on early marriage applications for Hennepin County from www.familysearch.org that there isn't any information on them that is helpful. Film 1380401 is for June 1894 - August 1896. All this film had was the name of groom and bride and whether either had been married, divorced or widowed; whether the bride was 18 or older and the groom signed the application. Film 1380400 is for June 18, 1892 - June 1894. All this film had was the name of the groom and if they could be legally married and the groom signed. No bride's name at all. I have the marriage licenses but I was hoping there would be some more family information on the applications. Marge Williams

Thank you, Robert. I had seen his death, but it's too long ago for an online obit. But thanks for the reminder - when I'm next in the Twin Cities, I'll check the library for old papers. Joanne Gaudio
Architects seldom make much money but often get good obituaries as some reward, me thinks. I found a Daniel C. Bennett in MHS death index for 5-22-1935 trip to eternity.
